30+ Men who look very young

2020.09.15 16:10 SilentFox12345 30+ Men who look very young

Do any men have any experience with dating and looking very young for their age?
I am recently 30 and would say I live a pretty good life. Fit, clean, good job, good friends, good hobbies. I am 5'7 at 135lb and have the physique of a cross-country running high-school kid. I used to weigh more and look older, but I had a bit of a dad bod. I have a small frame, and my waist now is somewhere around 26-28". I much prefer being skinny, and I feel great. I don't have a chubby face, but I can't grow facial hair well. People consistently flag me as 17 without facial hair and low 20s with facial hair (which again doesn't look great). I would say I look like a fit version of Elijah Wood.
Now, I know younger girls tend to be more attracted to the pretty-boy types. However, I seem to notice that beyond 24 or 25, women tend to like the larger, bearded, tough man look (e.g., Chris Hemsworth). Is that true? I'll ask out all sizes of women, but I'd personally prefer someone around my height and size; am I shooting myself in the foot with this preference? Sometimes people say I look at lot better with someone who is on the short side (5'0, 5'1).

THE UNDERLYING TRUTH BEHIND THE JEWISH BABYLONIAN TALMUD'S PERVERTED DOCTRINES:
THE JEWISH TALMUD is "Holy Writ" for the Jews.
The Talmud supercedes the Old Testament in authority for the Jews. And the Talmud is the most racist, hate-mongering , blasphemous book the world has ever known.
The Talmud was written in Hebrew between the 3rd & 6th Centuries as a codification of the so-called Oral Law that the Jewish rabbis claim was handed down from Moses.
But the Messiah Jesus censored the "Oral Law" when He said, "By the traditions of your elders you make void the Word of God." (St Matthew 15).
The English translation of the Talmud has been watered down so as to conceal from the Gentiles the "satanic verses" contained in the original Hebrew.
The "Satanic Verses" of the Talmud can be classified into 3 categories:
1) Jewish Supremacy. 2) Hatred Towards The "Goys" (Gentiles). 3) Blasphemies Against Jesus Christ, The Virgin Mary, & All Christians.
SATANIC VERSES OF THE TALMUD'S "JEWISH SUPREMACY"
* "If a `goy' (Gentile) hits a Jew he must be killed." (Sanhedrin 58b)
*"If a Jew finds an object lost by a `goy' it does not have to be returned." (Baba Mezia 24a)
* "If a Jew murders a `goy' there will be no death penalty." (Sanhedrin 57a)
* What a Jew steals from a `goy' he may keep." (Sanhedrin 57a)
* "Jews may use subterfuges to circumvent a `goy.'" (Baba Kamma 113a)
* "All children of the `goyim' (Gentiles) are animals." (Yebamoth 98a)
* "Girls born of the `goyim' are in a state of `niddah' (menstrual uncleanness!) from birth." (Abodah Zarah 36b)
SATANIC VERSES OF THE TALMUD'S HATRED TOWARDS THE GENTILES
* "The `goyim' are not humans. They are beasts." (Baba Mezia 114b)
* "If you eat with a `goy' it is the same as eating with a dog." (Tosapoth, Jebamoth 94b)
* "Even the best of the `goyim' should all be killed." (Soferim 15)
* "Sexual intercourse between the `goyim' is like intercourse between animals." (Sanhedrin 74b)
* "When it comes to a Gentile in peace times, one may harm him indirectly, for instance, by removing a ladder after he had fallen into a crevice." (Shulkan Arukh, Yoreh De `ah, 158, Hebrew Edition only)
SATANIC VERSES OF THE TALMUD'S BLASPHEMIES AGAINST JESUS CHRIST, THE VIRGIN MARY, & ALL CHRISTIANS
* "`Yashu' (derogatory for `Jesus') is in Hell being boiled in hot excrement." (Gittin 57a)
['Yashu' is an acronym for the Jewish curse, `May his (Jesus) name be wiped out forevermore.']
* Yashu (Jesus) was sexually immoral and worshipped a brick." (Sanhedrin 107b)
* "Yashu (Jesus) was cut off from the Jewish people for his wickedness and refused to repent." (Sotah 47a)
* "Miriam the hairdresser had sex with many men." (Shabbath 104b, Hebrew Edition only)
* "She who was the descendant of princes and governors (the virgin Mary) played the harlot with carpenters." (Sanhedrin 106a)
* "Christians who reject the Talmud will go to hell and be punished there for all generations." (Rosh Hashanah 17a)
SEXUALLY PERVERTED CITATIONS IN THE TALMUD:
So that you may better understand the CORRUPT DOCTRINES, MORAL DECAY and background of Rabbi Simeon Ben Yohai, PRINCIPAL AUTHOR OF THE BOOK KNOWN AS THE ZOHAR I will quote the following passages and practices condoned by Rabbi Yohai to his jewish followers from YEBAMOTH 60B WHICH LEGALIZED SEXUAL RELATIONS between jewish priests and 3 year old girls: It was taught by Rabbi Simeon Ben Yohai who stated: A proselyte who is under the age of 3 years old and 1 day is PERMIITED TO MARRY A PRIEST. For it is said, but all the women children that have not known man by lying with him keep alive for yourselves, and Phineas who was a priest (the footnote says) was with them.
KETHUBOTH 11B: SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH CHILDREN When a grownup man has sexual intercourse with a little girl, it is nothing. For when the girl is less than 3 years old, it is as if one puts his finger into the eye(in other words her virginity will return back to her). But when a small boy has intercourse with a grownup woman, he makes her as a girl who was injured by a piece of wood.
BABYLONIAN TALMUD SANHEDRIN 54b ".....A child less than 9 years old can not be the subject of SODOMY"!
A RABBI WHO HAD SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH EVERY WHORE IN THE WORLD;
FROM THE BABYLONIAN TALMUD WE READ THE FOLLOWING: "ABODAH ZARAH 17A STATES THAT THERE IS NOT A WHORE IN THE WORLD THAT THE TALMUDIC SAGE RABBI ELEAZAR HAS NOT HAD SEX WITH".
ADAM HAD SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH ALL THE ANIMALS IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN. BABYLONIAN TALMUD YEBAMOTH 63A.
GENTILES ARE INCLINED TO BESTIALITY. LEWDNESS AND MURDER. GENTILES PREFER SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH COWS MORE THAN THEIR OWN WIVES. EVE HAD SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH THE SERPENT, TRANSMITTING LUST TO THE GENTILES, FROM WHICH THE ISRAELITES ARE EXEMPT. BABYLONIAN TALMUD ABODAH ZARAH 22A.
A WOMAN WHO HAD SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH A BEAST IS ELIGIBLE TO MARRY A JEWISH PRIEST. A WOMAN WHO HAS SEX WITH ADAIC HU DEMON IS ALSO ELIGIBLE TO MARRY A JEWISH PRIEST. BABYLONIAN TALMUD YEBAMOTH 59B.
"HUSBANDS MAY TREAT THEIR WIVES LIKE MEAT FROM THE BUTCHER SHOP" THE TALMUD PERMITS THE JUDAIC HUSBAND TO SODOMIZE HIS WIFE TO HIS HEART'S CONTENT, SINCE THE CHAZAL/TALMUDIC RABBINICAL SAGES DECREE THAT SHE IS NOT ENTIRELY A HUMAN BEING, BUT RATHER A PIECE OF MEAT FROM A BUTCHER SHOP. ANAL SEX AND OTHER PRACTICES ARE PERMISSIBLE TO THE JUDAIC HUSBAND BECAUSE IN HIS RELATIONS WITH HIS WIFE, HE IS DEALING NOT WITH A WOMAN, BUT MEAT, THE DESIGNATION FEMINISTS RIGHTLY DECRY AND HERE IS A RELIGION THAT FORMERLY PRECRIBES IT. IN CONSIDERING WHICH SEXUAL PRACTICES ARE FITTING FOR THE HUSBAND AND WIFE, THE TALMUD STATES CONCERNING INTIMATE RELATIONS WITH THE JUDAIC WIFE: "MEAT WHICH COMES FROM THE BUTCHER MAY BE EATEN SALTED. ROASTED, COOKED OR BOILED; SO WITH FISH FROM THE FISHMONGER"- BABYLONIAN TALMUD NEDARIM 20.
ZIMRI ENGAGED COZBI IN SEXUAL RELATIONS 424 TIMES IN ONE DAY. ALSO HER WOMB WAS ONE AND HALF FEET WIDE. BABYLONIAN TALMUD SANHEDRIN 82b.
WOMEN CANNOT CONCEIVE BEFORE THEY REACH 12 YEARS AND A DAY OLD, ACCORDING TO THE RABBIS. WHEN ASKED HOW IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT A GENTILE GIRL HAD CONCIEVED AT AGE 6, THE RABBI REPLIED THAT GENTILES ARE NOT HUMAN. BABYLONIAN TALMUD NIDDAH 45a.
RABBIS INTELLECTUALLY MORE SUPERIOR THAN GOD:
A SLY RABBI DEBATES GOD AND THROUGH TRICKERY DEFEATS HIM. GOD ADMITS THE RABBI WON THE DEBATE. BABYLONIAN TALMUD BABA MEZIA 59b.
GOD INTERVENES IN A RABBINIC DISPUTE AND IS LOGICALLY DEFEATED BY A RABBI. THE COMMANDS OF THE RABBIS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE COMMANDS OF THE BIBLE. WHOEVER DISOBEYS THE RABBIS DESERVES DEATH AND WILL BE PUNISHED IN HELL WITH BOILING EXCREMENT-BABYLONIAN TALMUD ERUBIN 21B.
ELIJAH AND MOSES BLAMED GOD FOR CAUSING THE ISRAELITES TO SIN. GOD ADMITTED THEY WERE RIGHT: BABYLONIAN TALMUD BERAKOTH 31b-32a.
BABYLONIAN TALMUD BERAKOT 7a: GOD ASKS A RABBI FOR A RABBI'S BLESSING
GOD DECREES AND THE ZADDIK NULLIFIES GOD'S DECREE. BABYLONIAN TALMUD MO'ED KATTAN 16b.(The Zaddik is said to have the ability to change heavenly decrees and alter divine judgments. A Zaddik is a Judaic living saint, often reputed to be possessed of miraculous or MAGICAL POWERS).
SINCE GOD ALREADY GAVE THE TORAH TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE ON MOUNT SINAI WE NO LONGER PAY ATTENTION TO HEAVENLY VOICES. GOD MUST SUBMIT TO THE DECISIONS OF A MAJORITY VOTE OF THE RABBIS. BABYLONIAN TALMUD BAVA METZIA 59b.
TALMUD CITATIONS CONCERNING CHRISTIANITY:
CHRISTIANS ARE ALLIED WITH HELL, AND CHRISTIANITY IS WORSE THAN INCEST-BABYLONIAN TALMUD AVODAH ZARAH 17A.
GOING TO PROSTITUTES IS THE SAME AS BECOMING A CHRISTIAN-BABYLONIAN TALMUD AVODAH ZARAH 17A.
THOSE WHO READ THE GOSPELS ARE DOOMED TO HELL-BABYLONIAN TALMUD SANHEDRIN 90A.
WHEN THE MESSIAH COMES, HE WILL DESTROY THE CHRISTIANS-BABYLONIAN TALMUD SANHEDRIN 99A.
CHRISTIANS AND OTHERS WHO REJECT THE TALMUD WILL GO TO HELL AND BE PUNISHED THERE FOR ALL GENERATIONS-BABYLONIAN TALMUD SANHEDRIN 90A.
THOSE WHO READ THE NEW TESTAMENT WILL HAVE NO PORTION IN THE WORLD TO COME-BABYLONIAN TALMUD ROSH HASHANAH 17A.
JEWS MUST DESTROY THE BOOKS OF THE CHRISTIANS i.e. the NEW TESTAMENT: THE BOOKS OF THE CHRISTIANS MAY NOT BE SAVED FROM A FIRE, BUT THEY MUST BE BURNT IN THEIR PLACE-BABYLONIAN TALMUD SHABBAT 116A.
In the Jewish religion, as ordained by the Babylonian Talmud, Blacks are eternally cursed through the channel known as "The Curse of Ham." Though the curse originated in Chapter 9 of Genesis in the Bible, no racial identity was applied to Ham, son of the prophet Noah, and there was certainly no anti-Black prejudice. The racist origins of The Curse of Ham originated within the `wise' rabbinic pages of the Talmud, which damned Blacks to an infinite existence of enslavement. Stated the rabbis, "Ham is told by his outraged father that, because you have abused me in the darkness of night, your children shall be born black and ugly; because you have twisted your head to cause me embarrassment, they shall have kinky hair and red eyes; because your lips jested at my expense theirs shall swell; and because you neglected my nakedness, they shall go naked (1)." Moses Maimonides, Judaism's most celebrated rabbinic `sage,' has written that Blacks are "irrational animals" who are "below mankind but above monkeys (2)."
Maimonides' views are central to the overall Jewish view of Black people, as his name among Jews is an infallible and holy one. Talmudic rabbis have deepened The Curse of Ham over time, attributing bestiality as a regular engagement among Blacks, concocting depraved sexual fantasies of Ham fornicating with dogs and ravens and thus, having his skin damned with even more blackness for his perversion (3). Sick would be an understatement; demented wouldn't even begin the description. And when the usurping Zionist regime's policies towards Ethiopian Jews are examined in depth, and they are nothing short of emphatically deplorable, as well as Jewish discrimination against Blacks in the United States due to the disproportionate Jewish accumulation of wealth (4), it is as clear as the sky is dark when the sun falls that these hideous Talmudic beliefs are very much intact today, in the main blocs of Jewish life.
The Rothschild family, the infamous and monstrously powerful Jewish dynasty of bankers, socialites and philanthropists who are rightly considered to be the godfathers of the criminal Zionist entity, are also linked to profiting from the Transatlantic Slave Trade (5). The Rothschild family was also fervently Talmudist, a tradition dating back to the family's grandsire, Mayer Amschel himself, who was described by one S.J. Cohen in an unofficial, albeit accurate, admiring and authoritative biography of the Jewish financier entitled, "The Exemplary Life of The Immortal Banker Mr. Mayer Amschel Rothschild," as a "zealous believer in the Talmud and chose it alone as the guiding principle of all his actions (6)." Therefore, it shouldn't be one bit astonishing that the Rothschild family would take part in such a cruel, murderous practice as slavery, as their Jewish beliefs dictated to them that it was perfectly okay to do so; their halfwit, nonsensical apologies notwithstanding. The Rothschild dynasty's beliefs are also intrinsic to the spread of British and French colonialism throughout the African continent.
A FINAL THOUGHT FROM A VERY INFLUENCIAL RABBI FROM JERUSALEM, ISRAEL:
"GENTILES ARE LIKE DONKEYS AND THEY EXIST ONLY TO SERVE JEWS"
GOYIM(GENTILES) WERE BORN ONLY TO SERVE US. WITHOUT THAT, THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN THE WORLD-ONLY TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL....WITH GENTILES IT WILL BE LIKE ANY PERSON-THEY NEED TO DIE BUT GOD WILL GIVE THEM LONGEVITY. WHY? IMAGINE THAT ONE'S DONKEY WOULD DIE, THEY'D LOSE THEIR MONEY. THIS IS HIS SERVANT....THAT'S WHY HE GETS A LONG LIFE, TO WORK WELL FOR THE JEW. WHY ARE GENTILES NEEDED? THEY WILL WORK, THEY WILL PLOW, THEY WILL REAP. WE WILL SIT LIKE AN EFFENDI AND EAT. THAT IS WHY GENTILES WERE CREATED.
-Rabbi Ovadia Yosef senior Sephardic posek and head of the Shas Council of Torah Sages. A Sermon on the laws regarding non-jews. SOURCE: YOSEF: GENTILES EXIST ONLY TO SERVE JEWS JERUSALEM POST OCTOBER 18, 2010.

2020.08.04 22:37 OlleSkywalker Born 02 - 5’8 Swedish guy and feeling actually quite great about it.

Most of my friend are taller then me. I’ve always felt small. I live in a relative tall country. My dad is 5’11 and mum is 5’7. My brothers are 6’3 and 5’9 and I’m 5’8. My brother grew from 5’9/5’10 to 6’3 after 18. So maybe I’ll grow a bit more who knows.
But lately I’ve just grown to accept and embrace my height. And ever since I’ve just gain confiance for once. I’m actually pretty proud to be short. Maybe not that’s its my personality, but its somewhat is.
I’ve always been pretty fast, and ever since I just felt proud of being who I am I’ve lately just getting called cute and good looking by girls and guys.
And when it comes to dating etc and I hear that girls wants 6’0 above and you know what I think of that? I wouldn’t even want a woman that doesn’t like me for what I am and things that I can’t change.
And even if society views short guys as a disadvantage I couldn’t care less. I’m happy for who I am. And I can’t change my height. Matter of fact Vikings were considered 5’8-5’9.
Also gain a bit confidence by watching Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible, Tom Holland’s Spidey movies. Even some Tom Hardy ones.
And actors that I can someday relate to.
Cillian Murphy 5’8 Tom Hardy - 5’9 Josh Hutcherson - 5’5 Dan Radcliffe - 5’5 Tom Holland - 5’5 Tom Cruise. - 5’7 Kit Harrington - 5’7 Elijah Wood - 5’6 Dave Franco - 5’7 Jesse Eisenberg - 5’7 Mark Hamill - 5’7 Justin Bieber - 5’9 RDJ - 5’9 Zac Efron - 5’8 Nick Jonas - 5’6
And I know this might be a pointless post but I just wanted to get it out there. Have a great day :))

@sisterofonline on twitter is a catfish and likes to make us think shes Lela Star
Layla @ Sisterofonline previously @ Haramgirlfriend has been catfishing for so long as Lela Star. She either posts crazy filters or stickers all over the pics so maybe stupid people won’t notice. Probably thinks she’s smart by going private and deleting pics soon after but we do see it.
she used to post her real pics years ago back when she was @ meg4manda (Amanda) and thought she could fool us even though they look nothing alike and some simple google search of “Lela Star Selfie” proves that
really don’t know what she gains from pretending to be someone else but a lot of people seem to follow her whenever she makes a new account so I guess that’s why

2020.07.23 16:02 goingsouthhiker Cleveland Browns 2020 Offseason Review

I was tasked to write the offseason review for NFL so here it is

Cleveland Browns

Division: AFC North
Record: 6 - 10
Introduction
Hey everyone u/goingsouthhiker here to provide you more information than you ever wanted to know about the Cleveland Browns. My first distinct memory as a child is my fathers face in stunned silence as Ernest Byner fumbled at the goaline. I have been gifted through some sick hereditary defect a lifelong love of the Browns. so here you go.

Coaching Changes/GM Changes

Freddie Kitchens Fired
On December 29th, 2019, the Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens. This is the culmination of a coaching hire that seemed to be entirely based upon folksy blue collar catch phrases “if you don’t wear brown and orange, you don’t matter” and a good relationship with Baker Mayfield.
Some of Freddie's greatest hits included
  • 4th and 9 - Draw Play
  • Madden Style 5 WR streaks from your own goal line
  • Send out the punt team on 4th-and-11 down 17 points in the fourth quarter to the New England Patriots, only to change his mind and take a deliberate false start rather than burn a timeout.
  • 4th and 1 on the goal line and not have Nick Chubb on the field

John Dorsey Fired
On December 31st, 2019, the Browns and general manager John Dorsey mutually agreed to part ways after an up and down tenure that brought in a lot of talent but ultimately the decision to hire Kitchens and some questionable high draft picks sank him.

Kevin Stefanski Hired
On January 13th, 2020, the Browns hired former Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as head coach. This is another first time head coach hire for the browns after an exhaustive coaching search. This hire is the one Paul Depodesta of Moneyball Fame banged the table for prior to the promotion of Kitchens so ultimately the nerds won the battle a year too late.

Andrew Berry Hired
On January 27th, 2020, the Browns hired former Philadelphia Eagles' vice president of football operations Andrew Berry as general manager. Berry previously served as the Browns' vice president of player personnel from 2016–18 under Sashi Brown. At age 32, Berry became the youngest general manager in NFL history.
Berry has been considered in league circles as the next great rising front office star even from his early days in Indianapolis. Ivy league educated and an analytics darling now paired again with Depodesta the Browns will be heavy into analytics and efficiency in their decision making.

Alex Van Pelt Hired
On January 29th 2020, the Browns hired former Cincinnati Bengals' quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator. Van Pelt, who served as offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 2009, replaced Todd Monken, who was not retained by Stefanski.
Nobody is quite sure who will be calling plays on game day, The one thing going for this hire is when Van Pelt was the QB Coach for Green Bay Aaron Rodgers was super angry about Van Pelt being fired so there is that.

Joe Woods Hired
On February 7th 2020, the Browns hired former San Francisco 49ers' defensive backs coach Joe Woods as defensive coordinator. Woods, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 2017–18, replaced Steve Wilks, who was not retained by Stefanski
Woods is a man of mystery he has coached just about every scheme in existence and has given the ever popular "We will tailor our defense to our personnel" answer every time somebody tries to get anything out of him in regards to what he plans to run in Cleveland.

Joe Shobert LB - Was a tackling machine and rare pro bowler on this team, however too many of those tackles were made 8-10 yards downfield on run plays. His coverage skills were raw as well so I get not paying him big money.
Christian Kirksey LB - This one hurts a bit not due to production on the field as Kirko was hurt a lot! But more so as he was that beloved master of the Dawg Check and was a great team guy.
Damarious Randall S - A solid player who the Browns converted back to Safety but was always a bit of a headcase. He will be remembered best as the player who intercepted a Bengals pass and handed the ball to Hue Jackson on the Bengals sideline.

Man this is a list... Ok so there were very few holes on Offense going into Free Agency but the ones that stood out were both tackles and depth at tight end. The Browns ultimately solved one tackle spot and TE really early in Free Agency with what most considered the best available players at their position.
On the Defensive side we had a open call for any experienced body who wanted to take a 1 year prove it deal. So much depth added via players that fell through the cracks on their former team.

Top Signings

Jack Conklin RT - The top right tackle in free agency, had a nice season for the titans after coming off a major injury the year before. Can be a All-Pro caliber RT if healthy. Really filled a huge need.
Austin Hooper TE - or "HooooooP" As the falcons fans tell me I am to call him. Filled a big need for reliable catches at the TE position. With David Njoku in the dog house, unable to catch anything, and now asking for a trade this is a big get for the Browns.
Andy Janovich FB - By far my personal favorite signing. Acquired in a trade with the Broncos he is one of the best pure Fullbacks left in the game. I expect him to be a Fan Favorite quickly. There is nothing more that Cleveland Fans adore more than elevating a former Broncos fullback to Legendary status.(See Peyton Hillis)
Case Keenum - Browns fans all hope that the Baker Mayfield of last year was a product of really bad coaching, however Keenum can win games in the NFL and is a familiar face to new coach Stefanski having had a career year with Minnesota with Stefanski as his QB coach. I am much more confident in having Keenum as the backup than Garrett Gilbert.
New Contracts - The Browns have ensured Myles Garrett will be a Brown for a long while, placed a 2nd round tender on former rushing champ Kareem hunt, and after briefly flirting with Clowney decided to restructure Olivier Vernon to a much better contract number befitting his oft injured yet surprisingly productive season.

Draft - Cribbed from u/Marzman315 with permission who did a very excellent defending the draft and I agree with it in it's entirety. The Grades are mine.

Round Player Position
1.10 Jedrick Wills T
2.44 Grant Delpit S
3.88 Jordan Elliott DT
3.97 Jacob Phillips ILB
4.115 Harrison Bryant TE
5.160 Nick Harris C
6.187 Donovan Peoples-Jones WR

1.10 - Jedrick Wills Jr., Offensive Tackle Alabama Grade A
As expected, the Browns used the tenth overall pick on a tackle. The tackle turned out to be Jedrick Wills Jr., blindside blocker for Tua Tagovailoa. The former four star high school prospect started all 28 games for the Crimson Tide over his sophomore and and junior years. As a second team All-American and first team All-SEC player, he paved the way for Alabama's elite offense with his quick feet, smooth redirection, extremely powerful anchor and strength, and absolutely punishing punch.
This pick was overwhelmingly approved of by analysts both internally and externally. Joe Thomas released a reaction video that was enthusiastic to say the least. He made it clear that Wills was his ideal target for the Browns at 10th overall. The front office and coaching staff made it known that Wills was their priority target going into the draft, and were entertaining the possibility of trading up for him, but ultimately the draft board fell their way and they got their man at 10.
The only negative to the drafting of Wills is that he has only played right tackle in his college career, and given the free agent signing of right tackle Jack Conklin, Wills is going to be expected to transition to left tackle to start his NFL career. Joe Thomas also gave input on this, and stated that while the transition is difficult it is easier to do early in your career, and that he would personally take Wills under his wing and mentor him. Between Joe Thomas's guidance and the coaching of veteran offensive line coach Bill Callahan, not to mention the phenomenal talent of Wills, the transition should be doable for Wills with a minimum of serious difficulty. The protection of franchise QB Baker Mayfield is of paramount importance, and this selection reflects that.

2.44 - Grant Delpit, Safety LSU Grade A
Most Browns fans anticipated that a safety specializing in coverage would be a priority target on day 2. With replacing Damarious Randall a necessity, the Browns zeroed in on LSU standout Grant Delpit. Boasting phenomenal range, excellent ball skills, and tremendous athleticism for the position, he brings an impressive skill set to the team.
Once considered a top 15 to top 20 pick, injuries and questions about tackling caused his value to drop a bit over the season. His broken clavicle in 2018 likely led to a hesitation in committing fully to tackles, and his production in that sense dropped in 2019. Despite some questions about open field tackling, Delpit's football IQ, versatility, and ball skills are enough to excite Browns fans into thinking that they found a solid starter.

3.88 - Jordan Elliot, Defensive Tackle Missouri Grade B
In a post draft interview, Browns Chief Strategist Paul DePodesta revealed that obtaining 2021 draft capital was a priority coming into the draft. Depth along the defensive line has been an issue for the Browns for some time. Both of these issues were addressed with the Browns first pick in the third round.
Jordan Elliot is well known in the scouting community for being the darling prospect of Pro Football Focus, who consistently rated him as a first round prospect. While he lacks some power and length, he has a lightning quick first step and fluid pass rushing skills. His skill set doesn't exactly project him to be an every down player, but he can be a strong gap penetrating 3T rotating along the Browns defensive line.

3.97 - Jacob Phillips, Linebacker LSU Grade C Minus
Joe Shobert led the Browns in tackles in two of the last three seasons. Replacing that production was certainly a concern of the Browns. Phillips is an athletic linebacker that led a powerhouse LSU team in tackles. He is strong against the run, and plays fast and strong with solid instincts.
Phillips likely may not replace Shobert's pass coverage, as coverage skills were a clear negative on Phillips' scouting report. But as far as reliable tackling goes Phillips can contribute early, especially on special teams and base defense.

4.115 - Harrison Bryant, Tight End Florida Atlantic Grade A
Kevin Stefanski's offense notably uses multiple tight end sets and 12 personnel. Harrison Bryant is a very exciting receiving threat at the TE position. He projects mainly as a depth player behind Austin Hooper and David Njoku (if he remains on the team) currently while he develops his overall game, but he likely sees the field a bit as a rookie. He doesn't bring much to the table as far as blocking goes, but there is absolutely some exciting upside here.

5.160 - Nick Harris, Guard/Center Washington Grade C
While the Browns O-line was the subject of well deserved criticisms in 2019, the interior of the line was quietly fairly solid. Left guard Joel Bitonio is among the best in the league at his position and Center JC Tretter is a pro bowl caliber player. Wyatt Teller was unspectacular but played well enough to bring a bit of stability to the position. Lacking at the interior o-line was any sort of depth.
With years of experience at guard and center, Nick Harris will add solid depth and may compete with Teller for the starting right guard spot. He is a smart and nimble pass blocker, and while he doesn't have ideal size for the position (6'1" 300 LB) he uses his low center of gravity effectively to secure a solid base.

6.187 - Donovan Peoples-Jones, Wide Receiver Michigan Grade A (upside)
Wide receiver was sneakily a bit of a need for the Browns going into the 2020 draft. Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry are among the best 1/2 starters in the NFL, but after them the depth chart is thin.
Peoples-Jones is a perfect prospect to gamble on. He showed flashes of phenomenal play while at Michigan, and was considered at one point to be a future first round pick and NFL star. Injuries and abysmal QB play severely hindered his college career. His production did not come close to matching his talent. He is athletic, runs clean routes, gets solid seperation, and is good with the ball in his hands. There is a lot of talent here that can be developed.

Undrafted Free Agents:

Elijah Benton, Safety, Liberty
Ja'Marcus Bradley, Wide Receiver, Louisiana

Brian Herrion, Runningback, Georgia

Alex Taylor, Offensive Tackle, South Carolina State

Going Forward:
You will have a hard time finding a Browns fan who did not love this draft. They filled all of their pressing needs without reaching, were savvy navigating the board with trades, and acquired 2021 draft picks. The Browns earned one of only four A+ grades from PFF. While the roster is not without some holes, particularly at linebacker, this is a team that is built to compete. With improvements on the offense that will hopefully come with better coaching and a brand new O-line, the Browns are absolutely in a better position this year than last

What to expect in 2020

QB Grade: Incomplete
Baker Mayfield - This is the wildcard for the entire team. There is arguably not a better supporting cast in the league for a Quarterback. Assuming at minimum competent coaching there is no excuse for Mayfield going into year 3. There will be a long leash I am sure but Keenum is waiting in the wings if Mayfield looks like he did last year as opposed to the record setter he was in year 1.
As goes the arm of Mayfield so goes the Browns Playoff hopes.

RB Grade: A+++
Nick Chubb - Quiet, professional, will run you over and laugh at your pitiful tackle attempts. Nick Chubb is a beast, lead the league in yards after contact and nearly won the rushing title. In this new RB friendly system with an improved O-Line and an actual fullback Chubb is going to eat.

Kareem Hunt - It's not often that your backup running back is also a league rushing champion. Last year after serving his suspension he came in and made quite a few spectacular plays in the passing game and showed he still had that spark in the running game. This one Two punch is going to be fun to watch!

Pass Catchers WTE Grade: A
Goodness where to start... This might be an unpopular take but Jarvis Landry is the Best WR on this team and a top 5 pass catcher in the league. He has the most catches ALL TIME in a players first 6 seasons in the league. No longer relegated to slot duties as he was in Miami he had is best year in 2019.

Both Landry and OBJ went over 1000 yards last year which is stunning to me because it felt like both were under utilized all year long. With an increased emphasis on the running game and a deceptive scheme there should be a lot of wide open receivers for the Browns this year

Adding in a third down catch machine in Austin Hooper oh my.. The room is stacked.

Offensive Line Grade: B Minus
The OL has been a major issue at the tackle spot since Joe Thomas retired. It now feels like we have the complete package assuming Wills can make the transition to LT in this super strange offseason. The interior is still super solid. There will be a lot riding on the rookie.

Defensive Line A Minus
Oh noooooo MYLES!!!! How different would 2019 have been had Myles Garrett kept his cool. Fresh off signing a new mega deal Myles Garrett needs to be the great pass rusher he has been in his first few seasons. He was averaging a sack per game before the suspension and should easily go into double digit sacks this season as well.
Olivier Vernon when healthy is a QB pressure machine but he has problems staying on the field. When he is playing though He and Myles make a great bookend.
The interior is solid with Sheldon Richardson and Larry O, in the middle. This will probably be Richardson's last year with the Browns so I expect him to show out to push for that one last contract.

Linebackers Grade: I was told there would be no math
Do I believe in Mack Wilson? Ask me on a day he writes a fired up hype tweet and I will say he is going to be a stud. In the quiet times though I think to myself boy I hope the opposing team does not have a decent tight end because our LB core is going to get burned. I don't know what to think of the rest of the room as it is totally shuffled. Maybe Takitaki is something more than a special teamer? Was B.J. Goodson a diamond waiting to be polished?
The Browns need Takitaki, Wilson, and Phillips to grow up fast in this defense. Goodson has been a part-time player in his career and should have the opportunity to get more playing time than he has had to date in his career. With a one-year prove-it deal, Goodson has the motivation to show that he deserves a multi-year deal.
This is by far on paper the weak point of this team.

Cornerback Grade: B
This is the Ward and Greedy Show. Ward is occasionally dinged up but most of the time he is a shut down corner. Super young and is a willing tackler if a bit reckless in his form. Ward has the potential to be a top 5 CB in the league.
Greedy Williams had a decent season on the other side when he got into the game but it is his spot full time now and he needs to step up. The talk when he was drafted was he could not tackle. (Much like Delpit this year) but he showed he was more than willing to tackle and even come up and rush the passer and play the run when needed. With Ward on the other side he is going to be targeted a LOT.

Safety Grade: D
Who the hell knows.. Really. I know I said that Linebacker was the weak point but man Safety is as much of a question. Karl Joseph is a Thumper and with that he ends up injured a bit. Delpit has huge potential but is a rookie at FS and but supposedly has tackling issues. Outside of those two you have Sendejo in his 11th year in the league and Sheldrick Redwine who was a beast in college but has yet to really prove himself in the league.
Here is hoping Delpit lives up to his potential because man this is a thin group.

Specialists Grade: B
Scottish Hammer That is all... The Punter might be the best form tackler on the team hopefully he does not have to do that this season. Or we can stick him in at Linebacker.
But seriously things stabilized with two rookie kickers last year and they both look serviceable. Jojo Natson was brought in to do one thing and that is to return kicks.

Training Camp Battles

On Offense there is very little up for grabs maybe who wins the 3rd WR spot but given Higgins relationship with Mayfield it is his job to lose.
On Defense a lot of the battle is going to be who shows up at LB and Safety as discussed above. there are slim pickings at both positions and really the only people who seem to be safe are Mack Wilson just due to the playing time he got last season and Karl Joseph just based upon his experience in the league.

Scheme Descriptions

Offense: Kevin Stefanski as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator in 2019 produced an offense determined to run the ball and crush teams with play-action. Under the watchful eye of consultant Gary Kubiak he installed a Wide Zone blocking scheme that is time tested and very OL and RB friendly. It is considered a Run first offense which should play right into the Browns strengths. If Mayfield can tighten up the play action fake game the Wide outs should feast as well.

Defense - Who knows? I am not even sure Joe Woods knows yet what type of Defense the Browns will run. During his tenure as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator he ran a Base 3-4 Under defense. During his time with the Minnesota Vikings the team ran a base 4-3 which is also the case for the San Francisco 49ers defense this past season.
When asked Woods usually replies with something along the lines of "it's a secret"
Based on the Browns current roster, the preference would be an attacking 4-3 scheme given the strength on the defensive line and questionable linebacker core.

Season Predictions
It is an impossible task to predict a Browns season. Typically you could say 3 - 5 wins and chances are you would be right. This season with a new head coach, no preseason, maybe no training camp who the hell knows.
So instead of going game by game I am going to make some bold predictions.
  • The Browns will make the playoffs
  • Nick Chubb will win the rushing title
  • Jarvis Landry and OBJ will both go over 1000 yards again
  • The Browns will split all of the division games
  • The Steelers, Ravens, and Art Modell still suck
  • Final Record 10-6 with a Wild Card game win

Thank You's and Final Thoughts
If you read all this you are a better person than I. Big thanks to u/Marzman315 for lending me the draft section. Also a hearty Woof Woof to u/Usuallyrelevant who keeps us entertained over at Browns
Also the crew at LakeErieBros for sharing together our collective misery.
And finally I want to thank the Bull City Browns Backers in Durham NC for being awesome and showing up to every game with hope in your heart and unwavering dedication.

I did not hear from the non fan for the post so maybe we can add it later.

He is athletic, runs clean routes, gets solid separation, and is good with the ball in his hands. There is a lot of talent here that can be developed.

Undrafted Free Agents:
Soloman Ajayi, Linebacker, Liberty
Elijah Benton, Safety, Liberty
Ja'Marcus Bradley, Wide Receiver, Louisiana
Tony Brown, Wide Receiver, Colorado
Kevin Davidson, Quarterback, Princeton
Drake Dorbeck, Offensive Tackle/Guard, Southern Mississippi
A.J. Green, Cornerback, Oklahoma State
Brian Herrion, Runningback, Georgia
Jameson Houston, Cornerback, Baylor
Benny LeMay, Runningback, Charlotte
Jovante Moffit, Safety, Middle Tennessee
George Obinna, Defensive End, Sacremento State
Alex Taylor, Offensive Tackle, South Carolina State
Jeffrey Whatley, Defensive Tackle, South Alabama
Nate Wieting, Tight End, Iowa

Going Forward:
You will have a hard time finding a Browns fan who did not love this draft. They filled all of their pressing needs without reaching, were savvy navigating the board with trades, and acquired 2021 draft picks. The Browns earned one of only four A+ grades from PFF. While the roster is not without some holes, particularly at linebacker, this is a team that is built to compete. With improvements on the offense that will hopefully come with better coaching and a brand new O-line, the Browns are absolutely in a better position this year than last

OFFENSE:
QB - Baker Mayfield, Case Keenum (2)

SPECIALISTS
K - Austin Seibert (51)
P - Jamie "Scottish Hammer" Gillan (52)
LS - Charley Hughlett (53)

What to expect in 2020

QB Grade: Incomplete
Baker Mayfield - This is the wildcard for the entire team. There is arguably not a better supporting cast in the league for a Quarterback. Assuming at minimum competent coaching there is no excuse for Mayfield going into year 3. There will be a long leash I am sure but Keenum is waiting in the wings if Mayfield looks like he did last year as opposed to the record setter he was in year 1.
As goes the arm of Mayfield so goes the Browns Playoff hopes.

RB Grade: A+++
Nick Chubb - Quiet, professional, will run you over and laugh at your pitiful tackle attempts.

It now feels like the Browns have the complete package assuming Wills can make the transition to LT in this super strange offseason.

Delpit has huge potential but is a rookie at FS and supposedly has tackling issues.

It is a weak schedule on paper.

2020.07.13 17:49 TownandCounties Whimsy World

Whimsy world was a beautiful idea made real by a man you’ve never heard of named Elijah Ghould. Mr. Ghould was a lawyer in New York City, he practiced tax law for twenty two years from the late seventies to the mid-nineties.
He inherited his apartment after his grandfather's death in 1969, and therefore never had to pay a single penny in rent. He spent his paycheck only on food, utilities, and occasionally jazz records. He did not go out to eat, he did not go on dates. The man who built one of the most elaborate theme parks in the country lived an extremely private life. He built the park in total secret.
By the time of his death at the age of 62, Mr. Gould had acquired $9.2 million dollars. The remainder of his fortune was specified in his will to be used only on maintenance of the park, and in accordance with the law that is exactly what was done.
Once the money ran out, the park closed and has remained closed since. One of the most peculiar things about this story, though there are many, is that Mr. Ghould never actually stepped foot in the property. He never saw the park. In fact he never even visited the Berkshires of Massachusetts, where Whimsy world was constructed.
The strange circumstances of this story leads to much speculation of the man himself. There have been many rumors of his death, suicide being the most prevalent. But in fact, Mr. Ghould died of colon cancer. And that, according to all available records, is all that is known about the man behind the park.
Whimsy world was in essence, a daydream made mechanical by a man who had the means to do so. The lifespan of the park was 12 years. In that time, there were never any advertisements constructed, no billboards or tv commercials, no signs on the road pointing the way, no guests ever checked in through its gates, which were staffed by three employees seated in booths from 10 am to 8 pm seven days a week, all hired remotely by a manager who Mr. Ghould found in the want-ads of the New York Post. They never met in person.
In twelve years, no living person ever rode any of the fully functioning rides of Whimsy World. In the six years between it’s closing and it’s dismantling by the state of Massachusetts after property taxes were neglected, five people from surrounding towns were reported missing. Only one person is known to have disappeared from within the park itself.
There is almost no evidence to tie the five disappearances with the park, but the case of Jenn Mcfarland, the fifth and last missing person, suggests the theories from around the internet and most notably the North Hampton Police Department, about a link between the park and those reported missing, could have some validity, though as of yet, no theory has been proven.
The park’s quick dismantling left little recourse for those looking for answers. Most say the commonwealth knew exactly what it was doing when it took the rides apart. A town clerk who was interviewed by the local paper even claimed to have heard officials say that it did not matter what was done to the rides or property once the park was deconstructed, only that it must not be left as it was. Detective Romeo Arello of the Massachusetts state police missing persons unit had been in charge of the first case. A thirteen year old boy named Henry Mcfieren, who by all accounts was an average teenager, went out early one saturday morning to ride his new bike. He never returned. He was last seen 1.6 miles from the park. There was nothing about him that stood out to the detective, and nothing that linked him to the second boy, James Sill.
Suspects were rounded up, interviewed, surveilled. Nothing came of the investigation. And by the time it went cold, two more had disappeared. Olivia Green and Angela Bass, both also in their teens.
Detective Arello claims that the case never left his mind. He retired without solving the case but at the request of this publication, he decided to investigate once more, this time as a civilian. As he worked the case, he put together the only two links the victims shared, the first was their proximity to the park, and the second was that each child had been obsessed with it. As he questioned the friends of the missing, the detective found that all of the victims had entered the park at some point.
When they were children, the witnesses were reluctant, or unable to speak to the detective, but as adults, he found they were more willing to try explaining what they knew. He remembered some of the kids as high strung, nervous, and fearful, and so they remained when he sat down with them years later.
Robert Kinderman had been with James the night he disappeared. He told Arello that his friend actually had entered the park previous to his disappearance. A fact no one knew until now.
“It was all he talked about, that stupid park,” Kinderman began, “...he couldn’t put the idea of it out of his head. We walked through the woods at the back of the park where no one would see us come in. It was the middle of the day, back when it was still technically open. But there was no way inside. There was a fence that surrounded the entire thing, including the gates to go in, the only people who got through the fence were the employees but even they could only go to their stalls, the gate behind them to go into the actual park was always locked.
The fence was tall but we would climb anything in those days, and we brought a blanket to cover the sharp spikes at the top. James went in, as he was climbing I got this awful feeling from the place, I can’t really describe it, all the rides were on, you could hear the roller coaster soaring, and the carousel music repeating over and over, but no one screamed or laughed or even talked. It was just all these empty sounds. It didn’t feel right.
James barely looked back at me, he didn’t care if I followed him or not, so I didn’t. I just waited. I didn’t hear him at all in that time. He came back two hours later. He was giddy. I thought maybe the long wait would be worth it to hear his stories about the place, I was burning with curiosity, he didn’t tell me anything. He kept giggling like he knew a secret, I kept asking and asking, what happened? What was it like? What did you see? But the only thing he kept saying was, ‘I can’t tell you,’ and then he’d laugh. He was very happy with his time there.”
This revelation proved to be crucial as it told the former detective it was possible that all the missing kids could have entered the park. Immediately after the interview Arello called a friend in the department and told him what he had found. Since the land had reverted back to the town, it was a fairly painless process to order and excavation of the property as all remnants of the park were long gone. All that remained now were the indents on the earth, all long covered by overgrown grass.
Twelve officers were assigned for recovery operations. It took only three hours for the bodies to be found. All five missing persons had been buried in a single, long shallow grave, lying side by side, their arms crossed in front of their chests, heads tilted back. They did not wear the same clothes they had on at the time they went missing.
The autopsies revealed nothing more than their identities, all from dental records. The bodies were too decomposed for a definitive cause of death. There were no injuries to the bones, no signs of foul play aside from the circumstance of their discovery. Unfortunately the discovery only added to the mystery. A few months after the funerals had been performed, Detective Arello once again began interviews with the families. None yielded any new information until he spoke with the sister of Jenn Mcfarland, the last girl to disappear.
“Jenn was obsessed,” Melissa Macfarland-Howel, told Arello. “She would go biking around the fields at the outer edge of the park all day, back when it was working. I know you know she went missing after it had already closed but, when it was open, or, well I guess not open but, on, she actually met one of the staff people. She met a few but only one talked to her. Jenny wanted to know everything about everything having to do with the park. There wasn’t much but it was enough to satisfy my sister. The staffer told her she never got to go into the park. Her whole job was just to sit there like she was waiting for customers but of course, there weren’t any. In the beginning some people did show up of course, but there was that big locked fence that no one was allowed to go through. The staffers would all just sit there and smile until the people went away. After that people stopped coming and her whole job was just to sit there until one day she didn’t get paid, none of them did, and they just quit, then the park closed.
“She told Jenny that one day she forgot her book so she read one of the brochures. Apparently there were piles of them in each booth, and you were supposed to give them to the guests as they entered so, naturally, they were always full. That day she was so bored she read the whole thing, even studied the map. She told my sister everything, like for instance, the theme of the park was, well I guess you already know, it was whimsy. So like, they’d have things like, “The Daydream Cafe” which was a coffee, ice cream and cotton candy place where you would stare at the walls and see different projected images and stuff, I’m not sure, it sounded cool when she told me though. Oh and there were mascots, but they were like, anything and everything. Like ice cream cones that danced and there was a star named Estrellia, I guess it was like, everything was alive you know? Even the rides, like the roller coaster was alive and had its own story and when it took you it was like trying to make you scream and stuff. It wasn’t like it was an animal like a dragon or anything, it was actually a roller coaster, but in Whimsy World, everything was alive. The map showed places like the Omni theater, a dress up palace, and the explorer’s cave. She didn’t know what any of those places were really.
“The only other thing the staffer told her was about the itinerary. Like, every day at two o’clock there would be a singalong. The staffer never knew what the sounds she heard were until she read about it. She said they would just be sitting there, talking or reading, and all of a sudden, at two P.M every day, from way far down in the park there would be this chorus of robots singing a children’s song to absolutely no one. Jenny was fascinated. I didn’t get it. Then the staffer quit and the park shut down soon after. It stayed that way for a while before they took it down. You could hear the birds singing it was so quiet. She would take me there sometimes, looking for a way in. I walked around half of it with her once. It was too big to do the whole thing. We saw some of the characters and mascots, all just plastic dummies of course, but their big smiles freaked me out. Before they could destroy that place, Jenny went in there. Never came out...”
Photos of the park were not allowed. To this day there are only distant ones taken by a few outliers who visited the fence. Colorful towers can be seen in the distance, brightly painted buildings, each with its own purpose which was never realized.
James Sill disappeared from his house. His mother went to check on him in the night to find his bed empty. Surveillance footage from a nearby 7/11 store shows a boy walking in his pajamas, though the footage is too grainy to make out his mother did identify the clothes he was wearing as James’. He was walking toward where the park would be in relation to his home.
Two weeks after he was last seen, his mother found a note. It sat at his desk in his room, a place she had gone to almost every night since he disappeared. There had been nothing on the desk previously. Mrs. Sill was seen as a suspect in the eyes of her neighbors, but never the police. Once more children disappeared, the accusations fell away but the damage had been done. She took her life three years after her son went missing.
The note she found had no words. It was simply a child’s drawing of a face with the features of a cartoon character, with over embellished eyes, a wide smile and freckled cheeks.
For years nothing more was discovered, and for the second time in his life, Detective Arello walked away from the case.
And then, long after he retired, he received a video cassette tape in his mailbox. It was blank, with no label and no cover. He no longer owned a VCR but was able to borrow one from a neighbor.
The tape was a series of stillshots from high angles all filmed within the park. Security footage. The rides are shut down and grass grows from cracks in the cement. It was taken after it closed, but before its dismantling.
A security system made little sense as the tapes would have had to be constantly managed. Stranger still, there should not have been electricity in the park after its closure. But there was no denying it. The tape was footage from Whimsy World.
For the first few minutes, nothing happens. And then, Jenny Mcfarland can be seen in the abandoned park. Her behavior is noticeably abnormal from the moment she appears on frame. At times, she breaks into sudden sprints, then walks again. She hides, as if playing hide and seek with someone, though the tape shows no one else in the park whatsoever. At one point, she stops, as if someone is in front of her. She speaks. What she says cannot be heard on the tape. After a few minutes, a children’s song sounds from off frame. She stops and turns toward it. It sounds robotic and stilted. Jenn moves off frame, nearly skipping to the music.
The video ends there. There is no evidence as to who could have left the tape. Former Detective Arello claims he wants nothing more to do with the case. For months after he discovered the initial tape and handed it to police, his neighbors complained about late night fires in his backyard. They said it smelled of burning plastic. It is widely believed he has received more tapes, but no longer keeps or watches them. The case remains open.

2020.07.01 23:29 Jedi_Lemon Party Finds NPC a Boyfriend

So this is the first campaign I've ever run but im running for two good friends, my bf, and my bfs brother and they play well together. They were going on a job for the local watch and asked for a watch member to help out so I made a character called Jerek who they decided looks like Elijah Wood and is a sweet excited man with waay too many weapons on him. They took a liking to this guy and after a few fights decided to find him a boyfriend. I decided to have him tell them that he'd prefer one of the towns taverns over the other for price reasons and they instantly insight checked him realizing that wasn't the reason. So they dragged him along to the expensive tavern and as soon as they walked in, the bartender welcomed his regular guest, Jerek. Jerek acted very shy and the party spent the next 2 and a half hours, real time, talking up the bartender and pushing Jerek to go ask him out. It was so wholesome and eventually jerek got a date before scrambling out of the tavern to go home. Great players.

"For as surely as night follows day, there comes a time when even gods must die..."
The death of Superman. It's a story we all know by now, but back in the 90s it was a pretty big deal. Superman, the greatest superhero of them all, died. We've seen various media touch on the story since then, such as the loose inclusion in the DCEU's Batman v Superman. But what if Warner Bros. decided to directly adapt the comic itself, and much earlier than 2016?

Synopsis
I've based the plot of this pitch on The Death of Superman (both comic and movie), Batman v Superman, Birthright and Secret Origins.
Prologue:
Centuries ago, on the planet Krypton, the alien scientist Bertron grows an artificial life-form meant to be the ultimate survivor. Exposing the child to the harsh environment and natural predators of Krypton, Bertron resurrects his subject after each violent death until the creature is stronger than any other being on the planet.
Unfortunately for Bertron, the creature instinctively recalls its deaths and grows to hate all life, hunting down its creator and killing him. For years the monster roams the planet, slaughtering anything in its way until it is apprehended by the ancestors of the House of El.
The creature is sealed away, its exile from Krypton juxtaposed with Jor-El and his wife Lara sending their infant son Kal-El to Earth.
Act I:
Clark Kent's life as Superman is becoming more complicated following the forming of the Justice League. At the Daily Planet he's facing more pressure from Perry White, and it's suggested he suspects Clark of being Superman. After a relaxing dinner date with Lois and his mother Martha, Clark picks out a ring with plans to propose to Lois. He has a phone call with Bruce Wayne who encourages him not to mask his feelings, and just tell Lois exactly how he feels.
Bruce tells Clark there is still no sign of Luthor. Clark reminisces on an old memory from his days at college, where he in fact knew a young Luthor. They were almost friends for a time, before Luthor's arrogance and ambition drove a wedge between them and Luthor left to make his fortune in Metropolis.
In Metropolis, Intergang contacts the now-fugitive Lex Luthor. Smuggling technology left over from the Brainiac and Martian invasions, Luthor introduces the former soldier John Corben, now a cyborg with a cell powered by kryptonite. Going by the alias Metallo, Corben hates Superman and all aliens after nearly dying in the Martian war. Superman intervenes in a raid by the gang and is forced on the defensive by the cyborg and his heavily armed force.
But Lois's father, General Sam Lane, evens the odds with a regiment of his own troops and Intergang is stopped. Though he is also distrusting of aliens, Lane sees the good in what Superman has done and works with him to track Luthor. Saved from the crossfire of the attack is Jimmy Olsen, photographer for the Daily Planet, who Clark takes a shine to.
Act II:
Following notes left behind by Brainiac, Luthor travels far beneath Metropolis and discovers a ship containing the dormant monster from Krypton. He deciphers a message left by the Kryptonians, who call it the "harbinger of doom". Believing it can help him bring down Superman, Luthor has his aides wake up the monster as he places a mental inhibitor on the creature. Luthor allows the army to track him down and lets the monster slaughter them.
Clark is on his way to meet Lois when he hears a report on the destruction, and leaves behind a message asking Lois to call him when it is over. As Superman, he confronts Luthor in the street. There Luthor confesses his utter loathing of Superman, as an alien and a "false god" who protects a weak and complacent world. Superman rejects Luthor's outlook, condemning him for having nearly doomed Earth to Brainiac and affirming his belief in using his power for others and not himself.
The JLA arrive to help apprehend Luthor, and he releases the monster again, calling it his "Doomsday" weapon. But when Doomsday sees the symbol of the House of El on Superman's chest, Luthor's control over it is broken and the monster goes berserk. A brutal battle ensues, and while the JLA hold Doomsday at bay for a while the beast overwhelms them. Luthor is almost killed in the collateral damage, but to his surprise Superman saves him, getting wounded by Doomsday in the process. As Superman shields him from an overturned car, Luthor has a flashback to years ago when Clark Kent saved him from a similar wreck, and he is dumbstruck to realize Superman's true identity.
A wounded Clark pursues Doomsday as the monster moves to continue its rampage elsewhere, leaving a speechless Luthor and the incapacitated League behind.
Act III:
Jimmy Olsen and Lois trail Doomday's path of destruction and Superman's pursuit, and her father tells her the monster is heading into the Midwest.
Having evolved to hunt and kill other Kryptonians, Doomsday follows a signal it senses from the rocket that carried Clark to Earth. As it closes in on Smallville and the Kent farm, Clark once again stands in its way.
The two clash in a titanic battle, with the army attempting in vain to intervene. The fight reaches a crescendo when Martha Kent is threatened. Superman unleashes the last of his strength to defeat and kill the monster, but he is stabbed fatally by its bone protrusions. Lois arrives in time to survey the destruction. She reaches a dying Clark, comforting him and telling him he saved them all, again. Clark dies in her arms as the JLA arrives too late.
The League and the world are left devastated, and a shocked Luthor is taken into custody, still reeling over the revelation that his most hated rival was once the closest thing he had to a friend. Lois visits him in prison, hatefully telling him to remember that even in his last moments, after everything Luthor did, Clark still saved him.
A public funeral is held for Superman in Metropolis, and Clark's friends and family meet at the Kent farm to mourn him. Pete Ross and Lana Lang tearfully admit they were going to tell Clark of their recent engagement. Lois finds Clark's ring back at their apartment, and wears it in honor of him as the world tries to move on without a Superman.
****
In a cliffhanger, a portal opens on the moon. Out of the portal emerges a bearded man in a dark cloak, and a chorus of voices whisper a name.
"Zod."
THE END

2020.06.23 10:45 sexual_unicorn58 [MF] Roses and Buttercups

I was to get married to some prince, and let me tell you. I did not want to be married to any of the stuck up, rude, misogynistic pigs that are out there. I took to my maidservant and asked for her advice. For she had been with the palace ever since I was born. Well, since we were both born, she is my best friend. My most trusted individual. On the days that I was broken from my royal duties she was there to comfort and drink with me.
What she told me, however, was surprising. She told me to run away. To give up the crown for some life on the run. The law, my duties, my parents, bandits. It would be an adventure, but at what cost.
When it came to the planning, I did not know how to go about leaving the palace. How would I get by, and what would happen to my life here. Everything would change.
I thought about it for days, the wedding preparation was finishing up and the date was coming up. It would be in a few days, on the Spring equinox. THey say it is the prettiest day to do so, however, I would think that the Fall Equinox would be far more beautiful.
My maid and I planned for me to leave the palace two days before the ceremony. Since they are going to double the guards on the day before and of my wedding day. I wouldn’t see my soon to be husband until the day of so there was no worry of me actually liking him…
I would take my jewels and some coins that I stashed from the various gambling and games that I was apart of in the town. I would have to sell my jewelry and buy new clothing- ones that fit that of a peasant instead of the silks of a princess. Until I had that, I would wear the clothes of my maid and pay her back with a few dresses of mine that I haven’t worn in a long time.
When the time came, I grabbed the bag that we filled with all the objects that I would need. Including an extra maid’s uniform that matched the one I was wearing currently. My “escape” was quick and efficient, as no one would notice, they were too distracted with the preparations of the wedding and the prince arriving. I went through the tunnels underground and through the lower town. I look back toward the town and my kingdom- the people that I was to swear to protect and let out a sad sigh. I turn away from my people and take a step. On after the other. Until I am in the middle of the woods and I can no longer turn back.
I left my royal life about a year ago, I long for my kingdom, for the people that worked to help the kingdom run. When I first left, it was hard to be something I’m not. Not just acting like the lower class, but just converting to the way they did everything. The only villages that I had visited were the outlying ones- my father would only let me go that far. I went further.
I changed my name, bought clothing that was itchy but comfortable. I stopped wearing silk dresses and started wearing raw cotton pants. I got a bow and arrows, learned how to shoot, and quickly found that is my favourite way to hunt. During that time, I found a group of outlaws that became my family. Ironically, I met them in a pub when they broke up a fight that I was trying to get under control. We departed ways after that and met in the same area a month later. They took me under their wing when I started to really struggle with the life I had chosen.
Six months later, we found a man that was quite odd. Even though he was weird, he was interesting to me. Quiet and tall but muscular, his personality struck me as odd as well. He was bad at acting like a commoner, he was noble and honorable, humble and egotistical. It was obvious that he was trying to play two roles and couldn’t choose which he wanted. He had to be a noble.
That and his looks made it obvious that he wasn’t a commoner. He had muscles and could wield a sword better than any common man. His strong jawline and hard stare, full of knowledge and trauma. He seems like he belongs at court rather than in the forest. I got to know him though, he is very smart and kind, selfless and wants everything in the world. He was everything that makes a man a royal man.
I want to court him, I want him to be mine. His arms and legs look soft and yet they are muscular and I would love to lay my head on them. I haven't daydreamed about doing that or gotten distracted by his muscles during us hunting or being attacked. It is very un-lady like to do so anyway.
I do lust for him, he is everything that I like, that I want. For the longest time, I thought I was going to marry some mean, abusive pig of a man that would not let me do things or let me out of the palace. But with him, this man who is right in front of me. I feel happiness, if one day we get married, I’ll be extremely content.
Another year has passed, in my little tribe, the people have come and gone, we have grown with each other and apart. But I stayed, eventually I became the leader of the group. I don’t know how but I did. Dean also stayed, the two of us have come close though. But, we haven’t gone further than hugging, brief hugs, but they were still hugs.
One day, we were hunting, just the two of us, and some of the palace guards were hunting as well. They were from my kingdom, but I didn’t recognize them at all- which means they are new knights. Even if I didn’t know them, they knew me and the two years I was gone I apparently haven’t changed like I thought I had. They always know who I am.
In my dirty, ripped clothing, my old bow that I’ve had to repair multiple times, and my unknown love at my side, I was escorted through the kingdom. We walked in the forest silently, waiting for the coin to drop and for them to ask where I was, what I’ve been doing- but they don’t. Out of respect or fear for their ranks, they haven’t spoken.
The forest changed into a familiar area that I ran around in as a child. Me, my companion, and our escorts walk through the lower town. I take a glance around the area and figure the small changes that have happened. For the farmers have grown old with bits of gray dancing in their hair, the sunlight bouncing off the strands. Some of the vendors have been replaced by their children or new traders are in the town. My personal seamstress was in the crowd, though he lived in the lower town, he was the best at making me look my best. I look upon the shoe-maker, her work always made my feet hurt and bleed after dances and galas but her shoes were unique and beautiful.
There is a sense of nostalgia and sadness, mixed with confusion and glee, in the air. The four of us are silent and I take in the emotions that crossed my people’s faces. I raise my chin high, my shoulders are squared and down, my posture is perfect. Just as if I was only gone for a day and not almost two years. There are tears in my eyes but I don’t care for them. I made no attempt to brush them away or squeeze them so they would stop.
There are small whispers in the crowd. Rumors are being spread already. Why did I leave? Who is the man next to me? Why am I being escorted like a criminal? Anxiety and fear run through my veins and I stop walking. I look out into the crowd and I smile. A small, sad smile that filled me with wanting them to forgive me for leaving them. A cold tear runs down the left side of my face.
And I stumble, the guard has pushed me. Wanting me to move quicker, but I refuse. I move slower.
I let the tear dry on my face, I refuse to let my people know that I no longer care for them. They are my family, these are the people that I grew up with. I grip the bow that is in my hand a little tighter and continue to the castle.
When we arrive I take a look at the palace and take a very deep breath. I wonder what I am going to face. Are the King and Queen upset with me? Is there a new King? Are they long gone from worry? I fear for who I’m going to meet, but I still am the Crowned Princess. That throne is rightfully and legally mine.
We enter the court, as the door swings open, my posture goes stiff and I take the emotion from my face. I fold my bow so that it is tucked between my body and my arms, I grip it so tightly that my knuckles go white. We stop in the middle of the room, the two royal chairs are in front of us. My King is sitting on his throne, no crown in sight, but he looks as regal as my mother looks beautiful. He is hunched forward, his forearms on his knees as he rubs his palms in anticipation and anxiety. My mother is standing above him, a hand on his shoulder and one on the back of the throne. Her hand is rubbing his shoulder, trying to provide comfort, her chin on her opposite hand, staring into the wall.
The door creaks loudly and slams closed, my parents head snap up at the sound and eyes land on me. I bow and nod to the King, “Sire,” I then turn to my mother with a small smile, “Mother.”
I take another good look at my parents and immediately regret it. Emotions run across their faces- anger, sadness, but they are relieved and worried. Do I feel guilty about leaving my post years ago? No, these past years taught me a lot. My mother rushes to me and embraces me, I hang my head so I don't have to look her in the eye. My hands don't go to her like hers grasp my elbows, instead I grip my bow harder.
Even though she steps back, I don’t look up at her. My father appears behind her and I glance up at him, but my head doesn’t raise. I decided that I would submit to whatever punishment they gave me.
“You can do whatever you want to me, just do not do anything to him. I was not kidnapped, I was not brainwashed. I ran away.” I say, confidently and quietly.
“We know dear, but you should know that we would never harm your betrothed,” My King says. I turn my head and look at Elijah, as my face blossoms in embarrassment.
“My betrothed? Whatever do you mean, father? I am not courting him.”
“Yes, daughter, you are. That is Prince John, is it not?” Queen Mother replies to me.
Shock, anger, resentment, and betrayal are the emotions I feel at that moment. I shouldn’t have trusted him- should have left as soon as I felt something was off. To confirm, I fully turn to Elijah- John- whatever his name is. “Is this true?”
“I’m sorry, Princess, but it is true. I wanted to get to know you before we had gotten married. I saw you leaving the palace in those maid clothes and figured I followed you. I wanted you to meet me as the man I am and I wanted to meet you as the woman that you are. Not prince and princess, put together through means of our parents.” Though John was apologetic, I couldn’t help to second guess him.
On one hand, I trust him with my life, and maybe I am in love with him. However, he wasn't truthful to me. But I also wasn’t truthful with him about my heritage. I have no idea what is going on inside his mind, what thoughts he was having.
We are going to get married- I can’t run away again. My parents will have all the guards on me at all times. I think I will be able to trust him again, as he will have to trust me.
I turn to John and release the tight hold I have on my bow to grasp his hand. “I accept your apology, my Prince, I think we will get past this in a year or two. I must apologize for myself however, as I did the same to you as I did to me. I overreacted for something we did to each other. I am sorry.”
He accepts my apology and I wrap my arm around his waist as he hugs me to his side.
It's not all roses and buttercups, but we made it through the forest together, so I think that we will be okay.

EDIT: Applications are now closed, and we'll be getting back to people who we'd like to talk to more in the next few days. We received a ton of applications for just one spot, so please don't be too discouraged if we don't choose yours. There are definitely more great applications than people we can choose, and I'd like to thank everyone who took the effort to apply!
We’re an established group that’s looking for one additional player to join an ongoing campaign. If you have an itch for character-rich roleplaying in a superhero-esque heroic fantasy setting, we hope this post piques your interest!
You can apply to join this game on Google Forms here.

Summary

It is the year 499. Karlan is on the cusp of celebrating five centuries since the great god Thea, creator of the world, gave the Divine Oath to the Karline people.
The world you know is divided into two very different parts: Karlan, the bastion of civilization, and Mora, the endless and barren desert that surrounds it, Only Thea’s power and the Silver Guard keep the people safe from the beasts that roam beyond the Silver Wall.
But all is not as it seems. This is a story about a group of people who found that the world they live in isn’t as benign or peaceful as they thought, and that underneath the seeming order lies fear, oppression, and a diabolical plan that’s centuries in the making.
Almost no-one in almost five hundred years has seen real magic, let alone learned it for themselves. You and your friends are different. In this world, that makes you powerful heroes - and also in terrible danger.

The World

There is a map of the world on our WorldAnvil here.

Karlan

Capital: Alabrachorum, City of Bells
Karlan is the last of the mortal civilisations, the sole survivor of the collapse of the Age of Unreason. It is composed of one sprawling nation, from the mountainous north to the arid south. Its citizens live simply yet comfortably, eschewing wealth in favour of the greater principle of Divine Harmony. Karline architecture is elegant but built to last: simple, solid walls, spreading and stepped, topped with colourful dwellings in azure blue, sun gold and autumn red. Here and there, pure white Thean church towers look kindly down on the houses and terraced farms, their belfries shuttered against the constant wind.
Here and there, traces of an older, stranger world show through - an indestructible, seamless wall, a path that stays warm and snow-free in winter, a boulevard of perfect trees that glow at night. The Empire calls the time these objects came from the Age of Unreason - an ungodly and chaotic proto-world before the light of Thea saved the mortal races from their own greed. Artifacts from this time are banned and not officially acknowledged to exist, but some of the devices are either indestructible - or too useful and reserved only for use by the state. Such things are maintained by the Apocrypheers, a specialist branch of the Thearchy Practical.

Recent Events

Our story started with three officer cadets of the Silver Guard who were sent on what seemed like a wild goose chase to the northern mountain town of Tor. Sent there to investigate reports of ghosts and strange demons, they enlisted two locals to investigate the mystery. What they found instead was an abandoned temple to an ancient god of the Sun, in which each of the adventurers was gifted with an Anima - a spirit in the shape of a beast or a bird which granted them sudden magical abilities.
They also discovered the scene of a brutal murder, as one of their two locals, along with the owner of the local museum, was slain - seemingly by a foe thought by most to be a ghost story used to frighten children, the Pyraxhi demons.
Slowly our investigators uncovered the truth. In this world, there are creatures with the bloodlines of dragons - Dragonborn, who can turn at will from human to a scaled, draconic form. The Dragonborn live in secret among the people, and have been hunted for centuries by the Pyraxhi - in Draconic, the Flamequenchers.
Now our brave heroes are trying to uncover the truth of what happened to the museum owner’s missing children, what really happened to make the world the way it is,, and why they are having strange, prophetic dreams that speak of momentous events to come.

The Thean Church

Karlan’s Pantheon consists only of one true God - Thea. For practical purposes, however, most churches are dedicated to one of religion’s many saints, and many folk maintain their own shrines to these saints as well as carrying holy medallions to their chosen patron.
Our adventurers have discovered some whispers of the truth about these saints - that before Thea, they may have been gods in their own right, with their true names whispered down the centuries as a long-held secret.
The ten principal saints and their domains are:

The Thearchy

The Thearchy is the political and administrative body that runs the Karline empire, based in Alabrachorum. It is headed by the Thearch, Elijah Cromerty, who is the head of the Karline royal family.

The Silver Guard

Overseen by the Thearch and the Thearchy Practical, the Silver Guard are the military of Karlan. As no wars have been fought in almost five hundred years, this is largely a ceremonial function - but the Guard do patrol the Silver Wall and slay the occasional ankheg or giant scorpion that wanders too close to civilization. They also perform a much more practical law enforcement role within Karlan itself.
The Avenger Host are the elite of the Silver Guard, and pre-emptively patrol the barren wilds beyond the wall for nests of more dangerous creatures that might pose a threat.

The Arcadian Seminary

The Seminary is the principal place of learning in Karlan and has records dating back to the founding of the Karline Empire. It is distributed throughout the main cities but its seat, and its head, the Archprelate, reside in Alabrachorum.

The Hushed Library

The Hushed Library is a secret organisation within the Church of St. Tabitha the Sage, which is dedicated to protecting the Dragonborn and preserving banned knowledge about the world. The party are aware of the Hushed Library and are actively assisting it.

Building Your Character

Races of Karlan

Classes

All published classes and subclasses are playable. The current party composition is: Warlock (Archfey), Wizard (Bladesinging), Artificer (Battle Smith) and Monk (Kensei).
Most Unearthed Arcana content should also be fine, but at the DM’s discretion.

Bonus feat

Each character in this campaign gains a bonus feat at first level. By default, this is Magic Initiate, or another feat that grants the ability to cast at least one spell, such as Telekinetic, Telepathic or Wood Elf Magic.
If you are playing a spellcasting class, you may choose another appropriate feat.
The feat and the spells that you choose should be thematically appropriate to your character’s background and personality.

Alignment and Backstory

Alignment has very little practical consequence in this setting. Your character's individual reputation, however, counts. Broadly speaking, you are "the good guys", but grey areas, complex motivations and shady backgrounds all make for compelling stories!
More importantly: as the game develops, consider your character's motivation for cooperating with your party. This is a team game, and that should constrain your character’s behaviour.
You will also have a better experience in this campaign if you consider carefully what your character’s goals are, and why they are motivated to risk their life to change the world, especially with the odds so heavily stacked against them. Deep in their heart, what is it they want most? And just as importantly, why don’t they have it yet?

Gameplay

Roleplaying

This is a character-focused campaign. This doesn't mean you have to act or do an accent, but you do need to roleplay: specifically, to consider the unique way that your character interacts with the world that’s different to how you would think. You are encouraged to add depth to your character’s backstory over time, and to work with the DM to invent characters, organisations and places that you have a personal relationship with so they can be woven into the story.
You are also strongly encouraged to create your own scenes and situations with your fellow players. Listening to your fellow players, giving them room to speak and practicing "yes, and" at the table are all-important!

Combat

Not every session will contain combat. It will happen as and when it’s realistically created by the story. This also means not every combat encounter will be winnable, so pick your battles and retreat if you have to!
You are encouraged to use diplomacy, to be tactical, and to make every effort to be sneaky and make the fight unfair for your opponents. After all, they might be doing the same to you!

A Note On Magic

In this setting, spellcasting and the creation of magical items are both long-forgotten arts. Your character, however, is not a typical individual. At the start of the campaign, all of you find yourselves gifted with unusual talents. You also know that if the citizens of Karlan knew of your supernatural abilities, they would likely consider you to be a demon. So unless you keep your powers secret, there will likely be consequences!
You can’t buy magic items in this setting, although you will likely get your hands on some during your adventures!

2020.05.06 22:07 pathetic_goose I've been watching movies every night (almost) since the shutdown. Here they are ranked from best to worst, with a little review for each. The total count is 39 so far!

First off, I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe at home. If you’re like me (that is, currently unemployed and demotivated to hell), you’re probably watching a lot of movies. My sister and I watch one every night (aside from Sunday, reserved for Westworld), so I started to keep track. Here’s a list of each one so far; I’ve scored each using the four star method, with the lowest score being half a star, and based my ranking on how much I enjoyed the film, irrespective of how “good” the movie actually is. For example, Tremors is a cult hit that some of my favorite reviewers recommend, but I found it quite dry and poorly paced. So, with that in mind, here are the movies, ranked from worst (in my opinion) to best.
Spoiler alert for literally everything.
The worst movies we saw:
King Kong (2005) – 0.5 out of 4 stars
Anyone who remembers loving this film fifteen years ago (I mean, I did) seriously needs to watch it today. I’ve never witnessed a film so overstuffed with content, yet so shallow and vapid. The editing is an unparalleled nightmare, with cuts so fast they started to cross my eyes. An utterly exhausting experience and true premonition of what was to come of Peter Jackson’s downfall with the Hobbit franchise. This is where it all started to crumble.
2. The Bee Movie (2007) – 0.5 out of 4 stars
Jerry Seinfeld’s wealth and influence is the only explanation for what is surely one of the worst high-budget, Hollywood animated films of the twenty-first century. Tons of dry, adult humor that would soar over parents’ heads, let alone their kids, and a plot that blends a metaphor for the monotony of regular life with nonsensical kid-logic where a Bee can flirt with a human. It wasn’t even so-bad-it’s-good; the memes do this movie way too much justice.
3. Guns Akimbo (2019) – 0.5 out of 4 stars
An edgelord director makes a cheap VOD rip-off of John Wick and drags Daniel Radcliff down with him. There are almost no positives here, what with a metric ton of lame “gamer” jokes, terrible editing, inconsistent sound design, and bad acting all around. If this were a college student’s project, I would be so impressed, but it feels more like a goth teenager from 2010 made it in their back yard. This premise is wasted on a few decent jokes related to putting on pants with guns bolted to someone’s hands. Overall, I shame-walked my way out of this movie with a bad taste in my mouth.
4. Into the Grizzly Maze (2015) - 0.5 out of 4 stars
Jaws with a bear. James Marsden. Thomas Jane. Billybob Thorton. Direct to streaming. Base Adobe After Effects plugins. A greenscreen bear. Watch literally anything else. Yes, I paid to rent it. No, I’m not proud.
5. Dangerous Lies (2020) - 0.5 out of 4 stars
Another one to fill up the Netflix servers. A dull mystery, like if Knives Out was pumped full of Quaaludes and half the cast disappeared. The most famous actress they got is from the show Riverdale, and they name drop her in the title of the trailer on YouTube, if that tells you anything. The screenwriter is a sheltered fool with no understanding of how laws work and the story feels like the dramatization of a college student’s short story in their Composition 1 class, where there are some ideas at play but they still have to, you know, learn how to write. Generally embarrassing for all parties involved, especially anyone who watched it.
The still-bad-but-not-horrendous reviews:
The Golden Compass (2007) – 1 out of 4 stars
Tons of money, Daniel Craig, and Nicole Kidman couldn’t save this poor man’s version of The Chronicles of Narnia if it tried, and boy did it try. This is a case of the movie seemingly getting the source material right, and that being the wrong decision, considering it’s really, really stupid. Sure, the anti-organized religion themes are pretty cool for a kid’s movie, but the talking animals make zero sense in the story and have fuck all to do with anything that matters. The rules are unclear, the stakes are low, and ultimately, it all feels like a waste of time.
2. Underwater (2020) – 1 out of 4 stars
Ah, another Alien clone. Just kidding, this movie isn’t even as good as most clones (looking at you, Life). The movie offers about three seconds to the viewer before the plot literally explodes and pushes the “story” along. Remember meeting the crew in Alien, and how it takes forever for someone to die, but when they do, it sucks because you liked them? This movie was asleep during that part. It just goes and goes, meaningless, nameless characters die and die, and the monsters are cheap looking until the Cthulhu reveal, who’s the villain just because (this is how I assume the movie was pitched).
3. Event Horizon (1997) – 1 out of 4 stars
People love this movie, and this was my second viewing. How it’s a cult classic is beyond me. There are a few nice practical and CGI shots (also a ton of bad CGI, but it was the nineties), and some cool, weird set design, but otherwise, the plot is boring and predictable. My sister called it “It in space” which I think is apt, considering the evil force on the ship acts like Pennywise for some reason. Also, the famous the blood orgy? The Hell world? It makes up about twenty seconds of the hour and forty-minute runtime and is as tame as Sunday afternoon brunch. Honestly, this is another King Kong where people have faded memories and don’t remember the real movie, which, may I remind you, was directed by the genius behind the Resident Evil film franchise.
4. The Trust (2015) – 1 out of 4 stars
Talented directors with real skill behind the camera, great lighting, and beautiful cinematography; all of it for nothing, because the script is absolutely terrible. Poor Elijah Wood: he gets to work with Nic Cage, who, for the first time I’ve ever seen, is completely phoning it in. This could have been a wonderful black comedy, and it tries to be, except it’s shot like a spinoff of the Jason Bourne series. Everything is so miserable and serious, so flat and joyless; after thirty minutes, I realized that no one has any idea what their character motivation is. Random things happen and we’re supposed to believe it. What a waste.
5. Tremors (1990) – 1.5 out of 4 stars
God, I wanted to love this. I love practical, low-budget effects and a big goofy monster. I love the premise, the small-town townsfolk, the wooden acting. But honestly, this movie was too boring and joyless during any scene not involving one of the worm monsters. There were some awesome and creative sequences, but ultimately, I realized I couldn’t care less about any of the characters due to the weak script and dialogue. As a result, the movie felt four hours long. I was genuinely disappointed with this one.
6. The Simpsons Movie (2007) – 1.5 out of 4 stars
Again, when was the last time you actually sat down and watched this movie? The Simpsons is my favorite animated television show and featured some of the best comedy writing for the small screen in history, period. I quote lines almost every day. But the movie was edited hyper-fast, and while filled with a lot of good jokes, most of them felt like they were written in a vacuum. The story and comedy don’t gel at all, instead opting for two separate trains of thought. There are twenty-minute episodes from 1999 of the show that tell a better, more meaningful tale than the feature film, and that’s a tragedy.
7. Killer Workout (1987) – 2 out of 4 stars
This is a terrible film, made by a pervert who wanted to get hot young women into workout clothes, and have a killer who murders people with a giant safety pin (is that some kind of pun?). For all intents and purposes, it’s disgusting; but watching this D-level, horny director make this movie just for an excuse to jerk it in the editing bay is a spectacle to behold. Many belly laughs were had during our screening, but it’s hard to really recommend this unless you adore awful, awful filmmaking.
8. Samurai Cop (1991) – 2 out of 4 stars
Move over The Room. See you in hell, Troll 2. This movie makes those look Oscar-worthy. The only reason it has a lower score is because, despite being made by a bunch of incompetent jokers with mismatched cameras, barely any sound equipment, and the worst actors ever assembled, it can drag its feet quite a bit. This was my second viewing, and I have to say, I did become a bit bored. But if you’ve never watched it, it’s free with Amazon Prime, so what are you waiting for? Also, if anyone knows the names of literally any character, please let me know; that’s still a mystery to me.
9. Onward (2020) – 2 out 4 stars
Another safe installment from the immense talents over at Pixar. I was pretty let down by this movie, which had an interesting premise (also a very good ending) and good actors involved. But ultimately, the story is just Finding Nemo again, which, at the time, was told better, had more at stake, and left a long-lasting impact on cinema as a whole. All Onward is going to do is fade into Disney+ obscurity, despite the breathtaking animation, which is some of the best in the studio’s history. Seriously, watch the scene where the older brother drifts his van in front of the school, it looks incredible.
10. Stuber (2019) – 2 out of 4 stars
Movies like this usually get crap critic scores and great user ones. Was is a masterclass in storytelling? No. Did it have the best jokes I’ve ever heard? No. Was it a well-meaning, decently acted, and funny little adventure? Damn right. Sometimes you just want a good time, and this movie can give it to you. It’s nothing amazing, and it’s not horrible, but if you like Kumail Nanjiani, then hey, you’ll probably like this too. Also, Dave Bautista was pretty fun throughout as well.
11. Vivarium (2020) – 2 out of 4 stars
If this had been a half-hour long shot film, it would have been perfect. Good casting, a brilliant premise, and interesting visual style art marred by a director who has zero ideas on how to expound upon it all to create a feature film. Instead, he tries to distract his audience with a few new mysteries to solve, which end up as solution-less time-filler in order to get to the original short film’s obvious ending, which is spoiled by some nonsense arthouse symbolism about birds. Its deceptive how bad this movie actually is once the credits role; the only reason it scores so high is because of how good the first act is.
Now for the pretty good reviews
Wish Upon (2017) – 2.5 out of 4 stars
I can see your jaws dropping right about now, so rest assured, this movie sucks. But it was written by what seems like a two hundred-year old man trying to understand millennials, and it’s so accidentally hilarious I have to tell you all to give it a try. It’s the least scary teen-scream flick in a long time and the ending had me jumping out my seat, roaring with laughter. It’s shot like an anti-smoking advertisement, will dull, flat light and no colors to speak of. The actors are as equally bad as the script; I don’t know what directors see in Joey King that I don’t, but she makes one of the least likable protagonists in a horror film to date.
2. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019) – 2.5 out of 4 stars
I know, I know, your jaws are still on the ground. This VOD sequel to the totally underwhelming and dull original features several plain teenagers scuba diving in an underwater cave system, with a blind great white shark on their tail (yay, more puns). The acting is atrocious, there’s a scene where a fish literally screams at them underwater, and they have an imaginary comms system that somehow lets them all yammer on throughout the movie while also diving. But I watched this as a double feature with Underwater, and this was so much more fun in comparison. Lots of schlocky deaths, stupid scares, and every law of physics broken, which makes this a good popcorn flick to watch with friends (especially during a pandemic).
3. Color Out of Space (2019) – 2.5 out of 4 stars
I love The Thing, like I’m sure you all do. And this was a pretty good homage to the John Carpenter-era of eighties horror films. It even gets the cosmic horror elements (mostly) right. But this is one of the only times where I’d recommend not casting batshit insane Nic Cage for your movie. He actually detracts from the otherwise shocked and terrified family members who help ground the emotional core of the script. He seems to be off in his own world on this one, which ends up making the family dynamic disjointed rather than relatable. There are some true horror moments (mom and baby fused together, ew) that I’ll remember for a long time, but it does fall a bit short to the classics with hindsight.
4. The Rocketeer (1991) – 3 out of 4 stars
I’m twenty-five and have never seen this movie. This is a criticism of my parents, of course, who probably didn’t see it either since it was a flop at the time. But what a wonderful action adventure for any age, with great practical effects, and a fun story featuring our hapless, aloof hero fighting a secret Nazi spy who’s also a movie star. He screws up his relationship with Jennifer Connelly and has goes through daring feats to win back her affection. It’s funny, charming, and warm; I mean, what makes you get all soft and fuzzy like mobsters teaming up with the FBI to kill Nazis? I miss this Disney!
5. Sky High (2005) – 3 out of 4 stars
My sister begged to watch this one night. “When’s the last time you saw it?” she said. Over and over. I heard the premise; I thought it was stupid. I was sort of right, but the purposely cheesy performances from everyone, and seeing Kurt Russel and Bruce Campbell as lame superheroes, was actually really entertaining and charming. The plot was obvious but well-paced, and the director seemed to be doing a Sam Raimi thing (seriously, every shot is a pushed-in Dutch angle, like an Evil Dead for kids) which was a lot of fun. Honestly, I was shocked I enjoyed it as much as I did.
6. American Animals (2018) – 3 out of 4 stars
This was a really interesting take on the true-story genre, by having the real people interviewed and spliced together with the actors. It felt like a long episode of a docuseries, and that isn’t a complaint. Really well acted, great story, and good direction come together to make a fascinating true crime movie about four losers who try to steal millions of dollars’ worth of rare books. Evan Peters was perfect in his role and should be in more feature films. The only issue, for me and my sister, was that it ends up a little dry towards the end. It lacks that energy and excitement that would otherwise award it a higher score in my book.
Really good reviews:
Robocop (1987) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
Does it get any more eighties than this? Blood and gore, a stop-motion robot that makes tiger sounds and falls down a flight of stairs, crime fighting one-liners, a toxic goo man exploding; it’s just the best. This was, of course, not my first viewing, but my sister was giggling through the whole screening like a child. And its hard not to; this is the quintessential action movie of that era. The plot is simple and easy to understand, the bad guys are literal cartoon characters, and everything feels like it had a bump of cocaine before hitting the set. If I have any real complaints, I do think the tone wavers between having fun and being super dark, and that can alienate some viewers, so I can’t quite give it a perfect four. Sorry everyone.
2. Deep Blue Sea (1999) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
I love bad shark movies, and every time I watch this one, I make up the same story: a studio went to the director and said, “Hey, here’s a bunch of money, makes something like Jaws for the summer, it’ll make a shitload of money. Here’s a treatment script and all the budget you need. Do whatever you want.” And boy howdy did they do whatever the fuck they wanted. So many bait and switch moments to subvert our expectations, like Sam Jackson getting eaten mid-speech, or the lead heroine attempting to save they day and being eaten alive pointlessly in the last five minutes. If you’ve never watched it, you just have to. Don’t you want to see LL Cool J kill a giant shark in a flooded kitchen with a zippo lighter? Of course you do.
3. Prisoners (2013) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
Although it doesn’t fully explore the depths of each mystery, this is a brilliantly acted, tense thriller from the incredible Denis Villeneuve, who since joining Hollywood simply hasn’t directed a bad movie. Move the hell over JJ Abrams, we got a real storyteller here, one who doesn’t fancy himself a great writer, instead taking good scripts and elevating them into even better movies. This is a great, dark story that tackles the unending grief of having a child abducted, and the lengths you’d go in order to get them back.
4. The Invitation (2015) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
A claustrophobic, anxiety-inducing thriller starring a relatively unknown cast of actors (aside from the two male leads). The director utilizes one location with such skill, and gives really strong motivation for the protagonist to move this horror story that uses social anxiety, grief, and coping with loss to inspire scares. This was another not-first time for me, and I loved it just as much if not more. If I had to pick at it, I’ll say that some of the side characters (the friend group) could have used a little more fleshing out before everything starts to get weird.
5. La La Land (2016) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
There isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said about this one, but I loved it just the same. I remember seeing it in theaters, my musical-loving girlfriend dragging me along, and me dreading it. I even snuck a beer into the theater to try and deal. Four years later, everything that was wonderful about it still is: the music is brilliant; the chemistry between the leads is exceptional. It’s a typical Hollywood-jerking-itself-off story, sure, but I enjoyed the themes of following your dreams becoming something you weren’t prepared for and having to sacrifice one kind of happiness for another. The ending is solid too. Quick question though – is this a musical, in the true sense of the word? My girlfriend says no. And after watch Hairspray (which I hated), that seems to be the case. Please let me know.
6. Bad Education (2020) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
The best Hugh Jackman performance since Prisoners. A gripping, dark, and hilarious true story written by a guy who watched it unfold in person, this movie details the absurdity of embezzlement through a wealthy Long Island education system. The dialogue was slick, the acting perfect, and the direction actually very empathetic to all of the characters. It was a rare case of the film not really taking any side; almost bipartisan, like a documentary. This is rare for me in that I wish it was a little bit longer; I was hoping for more scenes of the aftermath, maybe the future, but what we got works just as well.
7. Looper (2012) – 3.5 out of 4 stars
A great interpretation of the future blended with the fun of 20th century organized crime. Rian Johnson has proven with Knives Out that The Last Jedi was some kind of fluke, because he really is a good storyteller. And, since people only rip his writing abilities, he’s a great director as well. This movie could have fallen into a million cliché traps, but it doesn’t; it has its own vision and voice, and in a world with endless science fiction trash, it’s very refreshing. I can’t call it perfect; Bruce Willis has a scene that basically tells the audience to ignore the time travel stuff because it doesn’t make sense; I respect this, but wouldn’t it be great if the emotional core of the script could make more sense? But bonus points for good humor, Rian’s got that down (aside from in Star Wars).
Perfect Scores
There Will Be Blood (2007) – 4 out of 4 stars
One of the most modern and compelling westerns I’ve ever seen (although no gunslingers here). Of course, Daniel Day Lewis is to thank for bringing the character Daniel Plainview to life; watching a hardworking, blue-collar miner become a twisted, wealthy, and ultimately soulless oil tycoon is breathtaking. The first half hour of the movie has almost no dialogue at all, and as time begins to pass and the characters develop, the dialogue that emerges is nearly unrivaled in today’s cinema (except maybe with The Lighthouse). The ending is worth the price of admission (which is free, if you have Netflix), and once you’re done with you’re screening, you too will be hollering “I am a false profit, and God is a superstition!”
2. Fargo (1996) – 4 out of 4 stars
Sarcastic and witty, this is the definitive Cohen Brothers screenplay. The performances (and accents) are now as iconic as Steve Buscemi being jammed into a woodchipper. The setup of the film, and lack of any kind of explanation for why William H. Macy is such a scumbag, only makes the story feel more manic, more off-the-wall. Everything is fine-tuned to make you laugh, while also intrigued as to what will become of all these pedantic, silly people. If by some miracle you haven’t already, give it a watch.
3. Rango (2011) – 4 out of 4 stars
It is absolutely, positively, fucking criminal that no one ever talks about this film. Much like everyone here, I’d never seen it before (free on Amazon Prime), and after three minutes I was hooked. The visual style, the cinematography, the bizarre photorealistic characters; it’s perfect. It’s oozing with style, with an amazing script jammed with jokes and a smooth-talking Johnny Depp as the lead, along with a great ensemble class. I’d wager to say that this is one of the best, if not the best, 3D animated film of the last decade. Hell, of the twenty-first century. This movie is what would happen if Disney or Pixar grew some balls and did something different for a change (whoops, controversial!)
4. Whiplash (2014) – 4 out of 4 stars
Damian Chazelle is a master of his craft; this much is clear from his debut fucking feature. Seriously, this movie has an intensity to it, and it achieves that by hijacking the spirit of jazz and injecting it with liquid stress. I normally hate Miles Teller (this is completely a personal judgement), but he was perfect for the role. I totally bought him as this young, doughy-faced college sophomore desperate for approval in a world that could give a shit about him. J.K. Simmons rides that line of being hammy and terrifying, and the direction is sublime. Chazelle is one to watch in the next few decades for sure.
5. The Witch (2015) – 4 out of 4 stars
So, I’ve seen this like five times now. It’s still amazing. What a first feature; I’m sure Robert Eggers thought, “Yeah, let’s make it a period piece with era-correct speech and fill it with themes of abandoning belief and existential dread, people will love it.” Spoilers though, only weirdos like you and me do. Our spouses and significant others look over at us, shake their heads, and say, “What the fuck is this?” That won’t stop me from singing its praises though; this is the ideally structured horror movie, with a captivating cast, script, and vision of survival in the seventeenth century. Really makes you think that being quarantined isn’t so bad after all (unless you're trapped with Black Phillip).
6. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) – 4 out of 4 stars
This is probably one of the most uncomfortable horror movies I’ve seen in a long time; it’s so bizarre, in fact, I’m pretty sure no one liked it or even bothered to see it. It made some pathetic number, way below its budget, during a short theatrical run, and then faded away into A24’s catalog. But I beg you, if you like psychological horror, slow burns, great writing, and being unsettled, please see this film. The dialogue is delivered by each actor robotically, in this unnatural tone that at first seems like a mistake; it could be easy to dismiss this as “weird” by non-horror fans. The film only becomes more nightmarish as the story builds towards its climax. Also, points for such an utterly strange plot that, for once in a horror movie, doesn’t feel like a retread of other, better films.
7. Thoroughbreds (2017) – 4 out of 4 stars
Talk about some of the best dialogue in the last decade. This movie is so simple, and both lead actresses are stunning in their portrayals of two complete sociopaths. Anton Yelchin gives his final performance and he steals every scene he’s in (as usual), and I was really impressed with just how sad his character made me feel. This loser selling drugs to teens while he’s in his mid-twenties, desperately working for something better doing the only thing he knows how. It’s really fun to see his tough guy persona melt in front of our leads, who despite looking like innocent high school girls, are planning a literal murder. If you want a thriller with great characters and gut-punching twists, this is the movie for you.
8. Booksmart (2019) – 4 out of 4 stars
Oh, happy day, a comedy that (almost) doesn’t star washed up SNL alumni (Jason Sudeikis gets a pass for being married to the director). Look, I’m not saying that every poorly directed, badly lit, bland film featuring endless improve from people that used to be funny can’t be good, but they usually aren’t. Instead, this movie takes the plain and simple coming of age story and tells it again, this time with millennials and stellar writing. And the best part? You don’t know any of the main character’s actors. They aren’t Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler. You don’t have to pretend they're real people and not movie stars. The leads are hysterical, their adventure is unique and filled with heart, and all the supporting cast are incredible. This isn’t just funny; it’s earnest, and it actually means something.
9. Vampire’s Kiss (1989) – 4 out of 4 stars
Okay, okay, here me out: you know that meme with Nic Cage, where his eyes are bugging out? How about that clip where he recites the alphabet in full while shouting at his therapist? Yeah, that’s this fucking movie. Never in my life, not since The Evil Dead 2, have I fallen in love with something so funny, so ahead of its time, that rides the line between utter garbage and secret masterpiece. And just like The Evil Dead 2, this is as masterpiece. You got Nic Cage doing what sounds like a Donald Trump impression, mechanical bats, Nic Cage eating a live cockroach, Nic Cage covered in blood with fake vampire fangs and a wooden stake begging New Yorkers to kill him. This movie was a failure when it was made, but I swear to god, it was made thirty years too early. Or maybe I’m just crazy.
10. Cop Car (2015) – 4 out of 4 stars
Add this to the list of great movies no one has ever seen but is actually streaming on Netflix. I clicked on this on a total whim, knowing nothing about it, and was beyond surprised. Every shot looks like it could have been principle photography for No Country for Old Men, except the two lead actors are literally children under the age of twelve. Now, normally, kids are terrible in films, between a lack of acting ability, and writers that don’t understand them. This movie nails how kids actually think. It’s not that they’re stupid, they’re learning; and on the way, they develop their own kid logic that, during this film, is enough to get them to steal a cop car in an empty field. Kevin Bacon is a wonderful villain, and the story was so twisty that I couldn’t even guess ahead. Please give this more love, it deserves it.
Jeez, that was a lot. Thanks for reading everyone! I apologize if I ragged on a movie you like, remember that this is just my opinion and you're allowed yours as well. Stay safe!

2020.04.29 16:01 glitzglamandgore What your fave LI says about you

Ok quarantine got me bored asf and I’ve done almost all the routes so I did this.
Edit: this is more what it would mean about you if you still liked these men and put up with them if they were real
Also: kind of a drag and a little long
OG Boys:
Rocco: you would fuck a man who’s mattress is on the floor and has one chair in his living room. It’s a foldable lawn chair. You would also fuck a man who probably showers once a week max. Doesn’t know where the clit is.
Bobby: You like men who are somewhat immature/childish with insecurity issues but are overall nice guys and will treat you like a princess. Date men who occasionally test your loyalty because of their insecurity issues instead of just talking to you. You also like men who can’t dress too well (wtf was prom?) and will let you do whatever you want in bed. You date men who flirt with everyone.
Gary: You like men who may not be the brightest but are hot, sweet and (semi) loyal and will always tell you that you look good. Probably watches a little too much porn (wtf is a helicopter Jesus Christ). Probably not too high maintenance as you think jeans are on for formal events :/.
Ibrahim: you would 100% take Ciara’s place and marry Russell Wilson b/c you like sweet, muscular, athletic kind, and rich men who will dote on you. Would be the couple that makes cute gender reveal videos and has matching sports cars. Like men a little boring but the sweet makes up for it.
Noah: You have decent taste but you like to struggle and are ok with being the other woman. You also probably say “he knows where home is” when they ask you why you’re with a man who cheats on you. Would pay a man’s rent while he has a girlfriend because you think it’ll help him realize who the better choice is. You send him money and he uses it to buy his gf a gift. Your first time together is in the back of his car and he takes you to McDonalds right after.
Boys brought in later:
Jakub: You like men who are hot and muscular and have super high standards in who they date. Probably has good banter but a little stupid and overall sweet once you get past the stupid. You probably think Emmett from Twilight is hot. Sex is probably mid.
Henrik: You think Alex Skarsgard is hot (and have good taste), live outdoorsy men and probably would fuck Bear Grylls. You think going camping would be a cute date and like men who think their natural scent is better than any deodorant or cologne. You know what compost actually is and actually try to live low waste. You can’t dress and neither can the men you like. Your first time with him is in the woods on a pile of twigs
Lucas: You like men who are hot and make good money and are ok with dating a man who’s pretty high maintenance, and honestly might cheat on you but expects complete loyalty from your end. You also like your men a little boring.
Casa Amor:
Elijah: You like men that are all around average but have decent banter. Says their a model but they’ve only done a few JCPennys photoshoots. You probably meet his friends and find one of them hotter than him.
Arjun: You either we’re that girl in college who dated frat guys who think no means try again or you like men who come on way too strong, give good hugs and are more corny than is necessary but when it comes to it will be super loyal. Puts a dog in his tinder profile and it works on you. Also doesn’t know where the clit is.
Kassam: You like struggle just like Noah stans but the difference is you’re not ok with being the other women. Instead you’re ok with dating a guy who doesn’t want you and you’re fine with putting 80% of the effort into the relationship only for him to send you a “it was nice” text message before he leaves you. You would say it’s 2020 and something about women’s rights if someone told you that you shouldn’t have to chase a guy if he actually likes you.
Felix: You think it’s the inside that counts. You date men who say safety before they fart. You probably would date someone who thinks 2nd base is naughty
Carl: You like older, mature (debatable) men with a solid dependable career who have slight insecurity issues yet are somehow a little arrogant. You also like them a little boring but at least they’re loyal and would pay your bills for you. You like hot guys but are 100% ok with being the hotter one in the couple and expect your bf to treat you like a princess and you’re probably a sub. You date nerdy men who mansplain and would probably give you the 3rd degree if you said you like anything nerdy. Oh and you probably like Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter.

2020.04.28 00:35 discipleofdoom Elijah Wood, Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson need to team up for the most bizarre indie film of all time

The three of them each got their big break as the star of a big budget film franchise but since then have revealed their true talents playing in some of the most interesting (and frankly bizarre) indie films of the last decade.
Not only have they starred in some of the strangest films to date but their involvement has often helped secure funding for independent directors who might otherwise struggle to find the money. Elijah Wood even runs his own production company to help up and coming directors get their weird and wonderful ideas to the big screen.
I'd love to see the three of them get together for the weirdest, most bizarre and out there independent film imaginable. If the stars of Swiss Army Man, Come to Daddy and High Life can't do it, then no one can!

2020.04.20 17:48 Bourbinsane New Bourbon Releases for 2020!

New Bourbon Releases for 2020!
All Labels and Images available on Full Review Below
https://www.bourbinsane.com/new-bourbon-releases-coming-in-2020/

Over the course of 2019, there were a whole bunch of new releases and core lineup additions coming out of multiple distilleries. We saw some new and delicious selections pop up, including Four Roses Small Batch Select and Old Forester Rye. There were also a couple bourbons I was very excited about when they were first announced last year, and they fell short of my personal expectations. George Dickel Bottled in Bond and Woodford Reserve Chocolate Malted Rye were a few disappointing highlights from 2019 given my personal flavor profile preferences.

At the end of last year and leading into the new year, several new whiskeys have been announced as upcoming for 2020. Elijah Craig Rye and the new Larceny Barrel Proof have been a few pleasant surprises thus far in early 2020. There are many more announcements I couldn’t be more excited for. That being said, going into 2020 I am being more realistic about my expectations. Given the current state of the bourbon boom, both price and availability will be major factors in how the new releases will be received by the whiskey community. With more and more distilleries putting out “limited editions” and one off expressions, I am anticipating demand will never be higher for these products. It is already challenging enough to find allocated bottles in the current state of the market, and there is no sign of that changing anytime soon.

I am going to be open and honest about my opinions regarding the distilleries and my anticipation about the juice itself. That being said, let’s dive into some of the new expressions that are already planned for release in 2020.

Weller Single Barrel Bourbon:

Buffalo Trace Distillery has been approved on the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) website for a brand new addition to the Weller lineup. The new Weller Single Barrel comes in at 97 proof, and falls somewhere in the middle of their current wheated offerings. Both the Weller 12 Year and Special Reserve are 90 proof. The Old Weller Antique comes in at 107 and the latest addition, Full Proof, clocks in at 114. Sporting an orange label, it is unclear when, or if this will hit the market in 2020. Price has not been disclosed.

My Two Cents: Why Buffalo Trace, just why. We already can’t find damn near every Weller expression in the majority of the markets in the United States. I wish instead of expanding the Weller line every year, Buffalo Trace would instead up the distribution and allocation of their very limited, but solid core lineup. Guess what, there is already a single barrel Weller out there in the form of Old Weller Antique store picks. Those are even more impossible to find for most of us, even though the few I have been able to try were excellent. I am hoping this will be the last addition to the Weller lineup for several years, and they start pumping out more juice for us to get the opportunity to try them.

Knob Creek 15 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Jim Beam Distillery has filed TTB labeling for a brand new 15 Year Knob Creek Small Batch Bourbon. This bourbon will be bottled at 100 proof and was announced shortly after Jim Beam stated they will be limiting their Knob Creek Single Barrel Select program for bar and store owners. In 2019, Knob Creek released a 12 year age stated expression. Beam Suntory must have been happy with the reception of the release. According to the label, the bourbon will have “…..aromas of caramelized oak followed by hints of sweet vanilla and baking spices. The palate is smooth caramel and toffee notes paired with toasted oak and light leather. The finish is warm with spice, light floral, and fruit.” No release date or price has been set.
My Two Cents: I am kind of torn about this new announcement. Some of the older (12-15 year) single barrel reserve store picks I have tried have been some of the most flavorful and rich bourbons I have had. I really hope they do not cut back much (if any) on their single barrel program, because I don’t want to miss out on the potential of those barrels. Most likely, the majority of Knob Creek store picks you will find in the wild will be right around that 9 year age for the foreseeable future. It is logical that those olders barrels will now be reserved for the 12 and 15 year bottlings instead. I am curious to see if the quality of the 15 year will be similar to some of those older picks I have tried. If I was a betting man, I am guessing the quality will be a decent step down from the higher aged store picks of the past. Also, let us not forget, this will be 100 proof and not 120.

Benchmark Bourbon Line Extension

Buffalo Trace’s mash bill #1 (low rye) bottom shelf offering is likely getting a complete labeling and bottling overhaul sometime in 2020. TTB labels were submitted for five different variations, all with different proof points and classifications. No specifics regarding release dates or prices have been provided.
My Two Cents: Once again, Buffalo Trace is capitalizing on the bourbon boom and giving the consumers more aged, higher proof options (theoretically…). In my opinion, the trend of public bourbon preferences is starting to head in that direction. More and more of us are seeking out higher proof offerings, as they generally tend to provide more full and rich flavors.
As previously mentioned, availability may become an issue with these new labels. While many more markets can find Benchmark, than say a Blantons bottle, it still isn’t everywhere. Also, how much different will a 90 proof small batch whiskey be from an 86 proof “Top Floor” bottle? The answer is, “I honestly don’t know”. What I can tell you is that Buffalo Trace is counting on me wanting to find out (And guess what? I do want to find out).

Old Forester Single Barrel 100 Proof and Barrel Proof

According to Jackie Zykan, Old Forester’s master taster, “….we wanted to be able to share how special some of these barrels are when the product inside is tasted in raw form.” Brown-Forman announced in 2019 they would be making some changes to their single barrel select program, and I couldn’t be more excited for it! Formerly, Old Forester Single Barrel Bourbon was only available at 90 proof. That lower proof point will now be replaced with 100 proof, and barrel strength single barrel versions. Bottles will also have a sleeker, redesigned label that holds true to the Old Forester brand. The barrel strength versions will fall somewhere between 130-135 proof. MSRP will be ~$50 for the 100 proof and ~$80 for the barrel proof offering.
My Two Cents: This is probably the addition in 2020 that I am most looking forward to, especially the barrel proof version. Old Forester Single Barrel picks have always been some of my favorites out there, and an amplification in proof is only going to improve the bourbon drinking experience. Old Forester continues to do things the right way, and is giving the people what they have been asking for. I know both myself, and several others in my whiskey circles, have long dreamed what a barrel proof Old Forester would taste like, and now we get the chance to find out! Given Old Forester’s track record with making their products available, there is a very good chance that most of us will be able to find these new single barrel offerings. My only concern is that I am overhyping it in my head. I hope to find out for myself.

Colonel E.H. Taylor 18 Year Old Marriage

Coming out of Buffalo Trace Distillery, the E.H. Taylor line is already one of the most sought after brands in their entire portfolio. E.H. Taylor (EHT) is no stranger to limited releases, with some of the most expensive secondary bourbon bottles out there, including Cured Oak, Seasoned Wood, Warehouse C Tornado Survivor, and Old Fashioned Sour Mash. The newest edition will be a combination of American bourbon barrels “from three signature mashbills that matured for eighteen years, including two different rye bourbon mashbills and our wheated mashbill.” Upon the back of the recently submitted TTB COLA label, Buffalo Trace states, “The marriage of bourbon mashbills gives this magnificent whiskey a nose of vanilla butter cake, a rich palate of caramel and cinnamon, and long finish of toasted oak, cinnamon, and a hint of spearmint.” This bourbon will stay true to the EHT line and be Bottled in Bond, coming in at 100 proof. Release date is unknown, but rumors indicate it may possibly hit the shelves in the summer or early fall of 2020. MSRP and distribution plans are not currently available.
It is worth noting that any new whiskey label that appears on the TTB COLA registry is not guaranteed to ever be released to market
My Two Cents: Sure, I would love to find one of these, or perhaps try a sample, but the odds are very slim. The described flavor profile and mash bill specifics make it sound like it will be an excellent expression. Availability and accessibility will be the major barrier to the average consumer having an opportunity to enjoy this one. Holding true to most other EHT offerings, it will be very allocated and damn near impossible to find. If I do ever get the opportunity to be able to try this 18 Year Marriage, I am very curious to see if it can possibly live up to the hype.

2020.03.16 23:53 MaralinaSakura Baby Bump: The Review: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The original post got taken down so here’s my second attempt uploading it.
Baby Bump: The Review: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
With the news today that Baby Bump will be getting a book two, I think it’s time for there to be an analysis about the book. For reference, I went with male Myles as my love interest, I completed all diamond choices (apart from the last two chapters and even with Clint). I am currently writing this listening to a Youtube mix of Vines and Big Time Rush so if there’s any references then cheers to you for recognising them. Anyway, let’s get on with it. (I’ll put a TLDR at the end, I guess)
The Good:
As much as this book does wrong, it… doesn’t match that with the good. I do admit that this book does have some good moments, although rare and shortcoming. They can be sensitive and do give some importance to real life situations. One example that comes to mind that was handled well was Bao and Anna’s relationship. PB handled Bao’s emotions when coming to moving on from his deceased wife and onto accepting new love in a positive way. While I do think that it needed more addressing and shouldn’t have been a diamond locked conversation, it does show that this book can have good messages for those who need it. If you want a constant good thing for this book, then I present to you: Luisa. A fierce girl who is not afraid of getting her hands dirty, she provides the much-needed comedy relief in a book that is mostly drab. While she does not fully heal conversations, she can get a good smile out of a lot of people with her lack of ability to think before speaking. She’s the sort of character that is well welcomed in Choices and my only wish was that she appeared in a book where she could be appreciated.
Unfortunately, that’s the only good I can think about the book. And I’m speaking from the heart from thinking over it for a good while. Now onto the bad.
The Bad:
This section will be a lot bigger than the good and I’ll be taking a lot looser tone as I break up the parts into sections.
The Plot:
I’m struggling to know where to start with this. The premise is that our MC is completely smitten with Mr. Clint Covington and they have a fling which ends up with MC being pregnant. It then moves to MC wanting to help the mayor with his restoration project of Gracetown and hiding her pregnancy from everyone and avoiding the nuisance that is Craig (the governor’s nephew?). From the get-go, it’s not a very exciting premise and would need a lot of extra tidbits in order to sound appealing. PB themselves advertised this book as “Baby Bump tells the story of a confident, driven woman who gets pregnant and decides to have her baby. Read on for a small town romance that will, hopefully, melt your heart.” (I only now noticed how lacking confidence that passage sounds.) Let me just say right now that, no, this book will not “melt your heart”. In fact, it made me cringe and unable to feel any sympathy for MC in any circumstance that happened to her. If you want my synopsis of the entire book, I’d write it as: “A dreary book about an MC who couldn’t keep her legs closed who desperately tries to hide her pregnancy for no real reason and ends up moaning the entire time.” Also, everyone is MC-sexual. The plot of this book is disorganised, uninteresting and an utter mess.
I think the question of “Was this book doomed to fail from the start?” should be answered. In short, yes. The pregnancy theme in Choices is a new genre and not one that most players wished for. Since a year or so ago, Choices has been releasing gender-locked books in much higher quantities (and lower quality). This book is another undesired lump to add to the pile of other books of this type (Sunkissed, Passport to Romance, Save the Date, etc). What didn’t help this book more was that the writers have absolutely no idea what they’re writing about. If you did not know, in one of the PB Insiders, we learnt that the two head writers of this book were using two very specific references when writing this book. The first is a man using his wife who gave birth for ideas about pregnancy. From a glance, there’s not much wrong with that. Then you realise that he is basing his ideas of pregnancy off one woman when all women experience pregnancy differently and never would’ve felt pregnancy issues himself. What gets worse is the second lead writer who is using their puppy as a metaphor for pregnancy and child raising. She compared taking care of her puppy to taking care of a child which is most certainly not a valid comparison. Now it makes sense why there are so many errors in this book and a lot of information that they clearly found on a quick Google search. This is incredibly obvious in the Baby Basket gifts. I just couldn’t find myself getting into a book with such a lack of pacing and such a dull story and plot. It’s clear the writers had no idea where they were going with this book and the preview we saw for book two leaves me with even less hope for a shining light to somehow fix this mess. If you want a book with little to no tension and requires not much paying attention to follow, then perhaps this is the ideal book for you. For the many others, it simply isn’t what we wished for.
The Characters:
Here’s where I begin to let out some of my own personal gripes about this book.
Clint (I’m a Massive Pervert) Covington: I’ll put it in short words: Clint is the worst part of this book. Not only is he completely inflicted with MC-sexuality but he makes me feel… violated. Maybe it’s because he isn’t my LI but I do not feel safe with this man. He feels like the kind of guy you should never be alone with and if you are… run. He speaks in such a formal manner but in a way that creeps me out and I come from a middle class family! “Miss MC…” No, Clint, please. I know he’s from, what, Texas, and that’s kind of normal but with that personality and how he carelessly impregnates MC… I can’t with this man. I need a restraining order. Also he has a wood cutting shed which I’m almost certain he lends to Elliott from PTR during the summers for his serial killing basement.
Myles (I’m A Tsundere) Dixon: Myles isn’t that bad but wow, how can they rush a character this badly? One moment he hates MC and the next second he can’t live without her. I feel like that they tried to put a slowburn on his character, but they scrap it the very next chapter and instead forced him to devote himself to the church of MC. Myles has a conflicting character. As an LI, he’s mostly sweet but his sudden healing from finding out MC not only lead him on but is pregnant and hiding it from him baffled me and showed how poor the writing is for this book. I don’t have much negative to say about Myles because he’s mostly neutral. He has a lot of development that needs to be done.
Main (Uses Her Privates Instead of Her Brain) Character: Oh no. Oh very no. I didn’t think it was possible to write a character more stupid than Sunkissed MC, whinier than STD MC and more arrogant than PTR MC. But look, PB did it! BaBu MC is a stunning example of how NOT to write a character. MC gets pregnant with a man who is only using her for a one-night stand (PB said as much), she has no job and depends on her “friends” in order to get her out of every problem she is in when she does have one. Never have I related less to than MC, let alone wished to share my name with her. Had MC not had her posse to heed her every word, there is zero chance she’d have survived. I’m not even sure if the MC that PB was talking about in the start of the book is even the same woman as this. She throws three drinks over Cassandra. Geez.
Supporting Cast (Mariana, Anna, Elijah, Keith, Cassandra, Craig, Selma): The supporting cast in Baby Bump, excluding Luisa and Bao, often does little to progress with the story and their relationships are locked behind diamond scenes. Mariana is an extremely unprofessional character who makes you genuinely wonder how she has a medical license. Anna is an alright sister but has little more than “I’m here for you” plot line. Elijah serves as the character who exists only to give you diamond outfits. Keith is a character who only truly appears within Mariana’s relationship diamond scenes and provides nothing to the story. Cassandra’s character is a complete mess. Honey, I do NOT want Clint. You can have him and leave me alone. Her role is to be the “big bad antagonist” who does not fulfil that role in the slightest. If Clint is not your LI, there is no reason for her existence. Craig is your typical entitled man-child who really needs to grow up and is somehow the true antagonist of this book. I don’t get it either. Selma is a clueless woman who could be completely removed from the book and there would be no difference. The problem with all of these characters are that their personalities are so one-dimensional and, with little effort, the majority of them could be removed from the book with no consequences. You will not be missing these characters when the series drops.
How to Fix This Book:
In the inevitable case that someone asks me “Well, what would you do then?”, here is my answer:
• Completely rework the plot. MC does not hide her pregnancy and it’s a story about how she needs to adapt to a realistic portrayal of survival in an active environment, not a small town in the middle of nowhere. Focus on the single mother aspect, like MOTY, but the story before that. The father should not be in the book.
• Rework Clint’s entire existence. Make him less of a stalker who invades my personal space by breathing and make him more bearable. Yes, he should be in the picture but not a forced LI because of his role in the story. In fact, Clint should not be the father at all.
• Rework Myles’ attitude towards MC. Myles has the personality of a slowburn and make it so that he needs to grow to accept MC for herself and see his inner conflict as he slowly has his walls broken down. I think Myles should still be her boss or in a more powerful position in a way that it doesn’t have ethical conflicts.
• MC needs to fulfil the goals that PB said in the first chapter. Be confident! Be driven! Stop relying on your friends to serve to your every whim and breaking down at every opportunity. I want another MC like MOTY who, while vulnerable, still faces her everyday life with bravery and does her best to overcome it. Maybe this book should’ve just been a MOTY prequel…
• Make the supporting cast more influential. Instead of the supporting cast being one-dimensional, give them more personality outside of MC’s existence. Make the antagonists more threatening that petty insults. Maybe not even have an antagonist and make it more of an overcoming scenarios book.
• Do actual research into how pregnancy works and set in stone MC’s development. The lack of research in this book is obvious and generalised. Perhaps the writers should interview currently pregnant women to get a grasp on how it affects people differently.
• Include the God damn baby bump!
Perhaps if we had these things implemented then Baby Bump could have the potential to be a solid book. If not, it’d certainly be better than what we got.
The Ugly: Why is Myles spelt like that. Do his parents hate him or something or do they have some sort of personal vendetta against Miles “Tails” Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog
Conclusion:
In conclusion (how formal of me), Baby Bump is the book we didn’t want, nor did we need, nor should have gotten a sequel. If you’ve not read the book, I recommend you don’t. However, we can’t ignore Baby Bump may be some people’s favourite book or they generally like it. If that’s you, hey, good on you. I have no hopes for Baby Bump 2 and the route PB is going with books lately is not going on a good path.
If you disagree with anything I’ve said or wish to add on to anything I’ve said, I’d love to hear more opinions. All I ask is that you be constructive and polite!
Side note: This ended up being over two thousand words. I seriously have a university project about the sovereignty of Parliament due next week that’s two thousand words or less and I couldn’t make more than 1600. I wrote more about God damn Baby Bump in like two hours than I did for my university course in a month. I hate myself.
TLDR: Baby Bump bad. The plot sucks, the characters are lacklustre, and I gave examples as to how the book could be reworked to be better. Yay.

2020.02.26 20:46 OldmanRevived i saw three movies (Horse Girl, Come to Daddy, Color Out of Space)

first up was Horse Girl
the star of Jeff Baena's ''Horse Girl'' is wide-eyed, soft-edged, and good at rolling with the punches. she's one of those magnificent waifs who can make fragility seem magical and demented at the same time. Sarah (Alison Brie) is a socially awkward woman who seems to only enjoy three things: horses, her job at a craft store, and the procedural television show named "Purgatory." she lives a monotonous life structured around those three passions, and doesn’t stray far beyond them until her roommate (Debby Ryan) sets her up with Darren (John Reynolds), a chance encounter that marks the beginning of a shift in Sarah’s life and psyche.
the film can be seen as a series of Sarah's failed attempts to connect, every one of them hopelessly wrong. when she attempts to date Darren, she's very seductive; we can see why he's tantalized. they're talking across a huge gap, and still they're connecting (though the wires are all crossed). throughout the movie, Sarah talks to people on a different level from the level they take her on. she's so closed off that she's otherworldly. much can be taken from her odd and disturbing dreams, which include two unknown figures that she later meets in the real world. she sees it as a meaningful coincidence, and believes that all she must do is remain alert to it, so that her destiny will take care of itself.
as we reach the first quarter of the movie, she seems like your usual introverted eccentric. it's not until foreshadowing comes into play that we see the descent. when she attempts to find out her ethnicity from a DNA sampling company, they don't respond, and thus, she starts to believe that she's not even human. during the course of the next few weeks, Sarah will find the walls of her mind tumbling down. she will discover that she intimidates people, and that she knows little about her own emotions. by small steps and amounts, Sarah begins to mirror the faults of her grandmother, who she claims to be an identical clone of. the rest, i will leave for you to follow. more than with many films, "Horse Girl" depends upon the audience’s gradual discovery of what happens.
the movie was written by Baena and Brie, who have explored the tedium and mystery of contemporary American life with an enormous amount of wit and insight. the cast, faced with the challenge of making their characters realistic, bring their sad world of loneliness and disaffection to vivid comic life. as a director, Baena has the occasional arbitrariness and preening of a runaway talent; sometimes a shot calls attention to itself, because it serves no visible purpose. certain stylistic sequences present Sarah's world as nightmare, and like all nightmares, it doesn't tell us half of what we want to know. we're not told where Sarah comes from, or what her specific problems are, because this isn't a case study, but a portrait of some days in her life.
"Horse Girl" might not have achieved what it set out to - or maybe wasn't even sure what it wanted to go for - but it is most certainly an enjoyable drama, full of oddities and led reassuringly by Alison Brie. comic and unsettling, the movie takes us through her apparently ordinary life to reveal a microcosm of modern day isolation. lurking beneath the placid surface of her world is the solid evidence of how tenuous the film's grip on reality is meant to be. with enough dawdling and carousing, it has made a strong impression, but we can't be sure what it is. we feel contempt. we feel pity. we shudder and identify. it is a vortex drawing us down into dark defeat and yet admitting glimmers of hope.
there will likely be much discussion about the ending. the more you think about it, the more you realize that any other ending would betray the purpose of the story. Baena has started with a domestic comedy, and led us unswervingly into the heart of darkness. is this a fantasy scene? are we experiencing her dying thoughts? can the sequence be accepted as literally true? i am not sure there can be an answer to these questions. the end sequence plays like music, not drama: it completes the story on an emotional, not a literal, level. we end on redemption, and whether Sarah gains that status in reality or only in her mind is not the point. throughout the film, her mental state has shaped her reality, and at last, in some way, it has brought her a kind of peace.

next up was Come to Daddy
In terms of all around mood, "Come to Daddy" is aiming for the tricky unknown. it starts small and almost innocently, then it rotates its story through satire, comedy, suspense and violence, until it emerges as downright eclectic. testing limits, breaking boundaries, and going too far; the film manages to make that its guiding principle and secret weapon. the jokes hit you in a subterranean comic zone that the surrealists' pranks sometimes reached, but without the self-consciousness.
the plot begins much like those serialised short stories that you used to find in the newspaper. Norval Greenwood (Elijah Wood), a privileged musician who still lives with his mother in a Beverly Hills mansion, receives a letter from his estranged father asking him to come and visit. Norval, who has not seen his father since he was five years old, makes the trek to a secluded cabin overlooking a lake in Oregon. the man in question, Gordon (Stephen McHattie), is initially welcoming to him, but soon begins to display aggressive tendencies, like taunting and insulting Norval, or even threatening him with physical violence.
all of this comes to a head one afternoon when David attacks Norval with a meat cleaver, but in the ensuing struggle, has a heart attack and immediately dies. this moment comes as a shock to Norval, but it’s only the beginning. what he uncovers next is a fiendishly complicated maze of hidden secrets and dark, unaccountable figures from his father’s past. the nightmare situation is built step by insidious step as Norval journeys ever deeper into this lunatic underworld.
anyway, that's all i'll say about the plot. it is fair to observe, however, that "Come to Daddy" is a comic study of ancient and honorable human defects, including greed, envy, lust, pride, and falsehood. interest in the movie depends on its surprises, but its delight grows out of the human characteristics of its performers. the cast meets the demands of the material with delightful enthusiasm and ease, making this a movie that's even more enjoyable for its performances than it is as a puzzle.
Elijah Wood is onscreen almost all the time. anxious and exhausted, he's meant to be the norm, an everyman bewildered by the treacherous, demanding occupants of this Northwestern Oz. we see everything through his eyes. it's a character most of us could probably identify with, the person to whom premeditated murder is unthinkable, but who has never had to test his values in the crucible of violence. the one real novelty in the conception is that the audience has a firsthand view of who is doing what to whom, while the characters have a blinkered view and, misinterpreting what they see, sometimes take totally inexpedient action. there's a great charge from this device, which gives the movie the pattern of farce—it works best when someone misinterprets who the enemy is but has the right response anyway.
the real standout, who takes the movie to a different plane, is Michael Smiley as Jethro, a man who was previously the father's best friend and criminal accomplice. if he is not able to convince us of his power, his rage and his contempt for the life of Norval's father, the movie would not work. he does, in a performance of overwhelming, brutal power. It's entertaining to see an actor who likes hamming it up, who enjoys the flash of playing an insanely clever villain. other members of the criminal troupe, such as a large man named Dandy, are quick on their feet with rage so strong that they are scarcely slowed; they look as if they'd popped out of a Tom Stoppard play.
"Come to Daddy" is the directorial debut of Ant Timpson, best known for producing the "ABCs of Death" series. the movie is as snappy and assured as it is mean-spirited. Its originality extends well beyond the limits of ordinary people and into the realm of the genuinely perverse. behind every comic turn of the plot, there is a sense of menace that increases. and for as long as Timpson and the screenwriter, Toby Harvard, have the temerity to sustain the film's bracingly nasty tone, it is legitimately startling. here is the work of a genuinely funny director, who has a real zing for original comic temperament.

the last one was Color Out of Space
like so many stories in H.P. Lovecraft's body of fiction, "Color Out of Space" is based on the fundamental lore and legend that the world was inhabited at one time by another race who, in practicing black magic, lost their foothold and were expelled, yet live on outside, ever ready to take possession of this earth again. those stories belonged to an age when people lived in fear of their own impulses, and in dread of punishment. science fiction, the modern successor to tales of the supernatural, has the whole nighttime apparatus of guilt and superstition clinging to it. the attraction of science fiction is that it's an escape into an almost abstract unknown. those who are frightened of, despairing about, or bored with this world like to turn their hopes to other worlds in space, but they're imagination and idealism are expressed in simplified, allegorical terms.
the opening scenes might remind you a little of Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." both films begin with a nostalgic memory of what it was like to grow up in a small town, back before everything became modern and a sense of wonder was lost. ust outside the city of Arkham, MA, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family have recently moved into his deceased father's property. they pass the time by growing tomatoes and raise alpacas for their milk. the family is strained by the move; his son Benny (Brendan Meyer) hangs with Ezra (Tommy Chong), a local hermit, and has started smoking pot; his youngest son Jack (Julian Hilliard) is withdrawn and only interacts with their family dog. his daughter, Lavinia (Madeleine Arthur), takes up the modern Pagan religion known as Wicca and performs rituals in hopes of restoring health to her mother, Theresa (Joely Richardson). one of these rituals is interrupted by the arrival of Ward (Elliot Knight), a hydrologist, surveying the water table in planning for a hydroelectric dam.
one night, a brilliantly glowing meteor crash lands in the Gardner's front yard. the rock emits an unearthly color which distorts the world around it. after a few days, they notice that the groundwater has taken on an oily sheen, and that the problem is spreading to the surrounding vegetation and local animals, altering them in unusual ways. the Gardners begin to slowly become witnesses the tale's eponymous horror; they are confronted by jumbled visions and attacked by a murderous apparition. yes, the monstrosity is somewhat ineffable, but its effects are not. victims suffer in body and mind, watching themselves and their loved ones change, helpless to stop the decay of body and brain. even the natural world is completely poisoned and destroyed, through no fault of their own. it's just chance. something strange falls from the sky, and by the time you realized you should have abandoned your home and fled while you still had your lives, it is too late. the contamination is inside you, changing you, rotting you.
the movie was directed by Richard Stanley, who manages to do the twisted tale of unseen terror a really fair share of justice by capturing the bleak, grotesque and utterly frightening atmosphere of the source material very well. he succeeds in making the compositions so startlingly immediate that they give off an electric charge. he puts us right in the middle of the action, yet there's enough aesthetic distance. one of the film's most consistent elements is the subtlety with which Stanley depicts the entity, or rather, doesn't depict it. Lovecraft felt that if humanity were ever to encounter real cosmic beings, they could be so unlike anything in our experience as to be impossible to describe, or even process in our minds, and one of his aims with "The Colour Out of Space" was to create an entity that doesn't conform to human understanding - hence the only description is by analogy, and even then, only in relation to a color beyond the visual spectrum.
cinematographer Steve Annis chooses to go the route of not settling for any one stable color. every time we see the effects of the meteorite, the hue appears to be in a state of flux, so although we can say the colors are recognizable, they're never identifiable as any one specific color, which is probably the best choice the filmmakers could have made. other choices are slightly comical while still carrying a serious tone. we get the ever so famous Cage Rage in the instances where Nathan excoriates and lashes out with uncharacteristic meltdowns. the voices and mannerisms he does here are, in a way, similar to his performance in "Vampire's Kiss," but at the same time it feels fairly organic, never becoming self-conscious. he does some of the way-out stuff that you love actors in silent movies for doing, and he makes it work with sound.
the movie takes its cold and frightening atmosphere and challenges us to decide: who is the reliable observer? whose idea of events can we trust? these people descend into versions of madness or psychic terror, and even time itself appears to be corrupted. we soon realize that we cannot depend on any of them for an objective view of what happens. it is this elusive open-endedness that makes the film so strangely disturbing. what's increasingly present is the spontaneity, the instinct, the lightness that would make us respond intuitively. each scene in the movie is so carefully structured to serve a purpose, and we feel anxious about the family's fate. it appears to be an intertwined process. Stanley seems to be saying that rage, uncontrollable violence, and ghosts spawn each other, that they are really the same thing. he's using Lovecrafts's hokum to make a metaphysical statement about immortality. the Gardners are his archetypes; they are the sources and victims of monsters that live on.
Stanley never loses the emotional drive of his subject, and he gives audiences full opportunity to luxuriate in the sensuousness of the spectacle. "Color Out of Space" serves as not only great science fiction, but great horror. watching the film, i fell into a reverie, sometimes moved, sometimes amused, sometimes involved in a strange dreamlike way. it easily slips us off into the shadows of fantasy. remarkable, how a film like this refuses to declare its intentions, but freely moves from pathos to pity, from melodrama to true excitement, from cheerful horror elements to the dark stirrings of crumbling sanity. the film extremely well realized and well made, and is to be applauded for not trying to attach an explicit meaning to a story which avoids any kind of thematic specificity. in all these years, we still have yet to discover what that blasted heath is.

2020.02.19 08:48 phelpsboltusa87 phelpsboltusa87 #2 Grand Piano (2014)

I hope this can help others see a movie they have been on the fence about, or have maybe never heard of, thus helping to open eyes to new scenes.
All films included are first watch-through opinions.
Date Started: 1/1/20
Date Watched: 1/2/20
Grand Piano (2014)
Rotten Tomatoes: 79%/47%
Starring Elijah Wood, John Cusack; Damien Chazelle screenplay
My Rating: B to B+
Runtime: 90 mins
Sometimes life hangs on a single note.
A renowned pianist is forced to face his fears of playing on stage, with life hanging in the balance.
I found this film by chance when looking at the filmography of Damien Chazelle, better known for his work on La La Land and Whiplash. He does a wonderful writing job on "Grand Piano," although it doesn't seem to be quite the caliber of the aforementioned films.
A thriller through and through. The performance by Wood cuts deep to the viewer. He invokes tension with his action, and the score works to elevate it even more.
